Will Mayweather Retire if He Loses to Marquez?
By William Mackay: Next month, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KO’s) will be fighting one of his biggest bouts of his career when he fights Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KO’s) at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. For Mayweather, he has a lot riding on the line for this fight. He’s 32, which is getting up there in age for small fighter like him, and hasn’t been active for the past two years due to an ill conceived retirement.
The question is would Mayweather be willing to fight for less than a million dollars per fight? He would likely have to accept taking smaller paydays until he builds himself back up as a star attraction. Unlike Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, Mayweather doesn’t appear to have a huge fan base that are totally loyal to him.
It’s hard to say why Mayweather hasn’t won over fans in the same way that Hatton and De La Hoya, because he’s accomplished more than either of them during his career. I think a loss to Marquez would hurt Mayweather dramatically in terms of future paydays.
The only way I can see it not hurting Mayweather is if he was able to lure a big named fighter like Ricky Hatton or De La Hoya into a bout, and then could ride their coattails for another big payday. There are some people who say this is exactly what Mayweather did in his fights against Hatton and De La Hoya. Although some people would disagree about that, his Marquez bout seems to be far from proving that Mayweather was the reason why the Hatton and De La Hoya bouts did so well.
What does Mayweather do if he is beaten handily by Marquez and made to look like an over-the-hill fighter? Would Mayweather fight on to keep getting a paycheck or would he have too much pride to start over with his career. A lot of famous fighters like Mayweather often go to pieces after a loss and grow bitter and end up retiring for a spell.
By the time that they do come back, they’re much less effective than they were before because of the time away. Mayweather has already lost two of his best years after a retirement. Would he decide to do it once more? I wouldn’t consider it a permanent retirement, because I think Mayweather would end up needing money at some point in time and would come back for that.
But will Mayweather take a loss to Marquez badly and fold up the tent for the second time in his career? A loss to Marquez would hurt Mayweather in a big way, because it would wipe out a big money fight with Pacquiao, you would think. It might not, though. In some cases, a popular fighter losing doesn’t stop them from being used immediately against another popular fighter who is in need of a big named opponent.
Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to Marquez, since he rightfully should be the one that fights Pacquiao next if he beats Mayweather. But, I could see him being ignored by Pacquiao and skipped over so that Pacquiao could get his fight against Mayweather anyway.

you are a good boxer
Anyone who thinks Maywheather has a cake walk has to be high on crack. If you look at the history of these two fighters Marquez has had the tougher road. I think personal that Maywheather will run when he realizes he has no power againt Marquez. We’ve seen in the past that Marquez can take a beating and comeback and dish it out,can maywheather? Never the less this should make for great fight, if both fighters come to fight?
mayweather’s lost could mean the end of his greatness. it justifies pacman as the new p4p best fighter of this generation. It might be the beginning of stars and much of dollars to get lost out of mayweather’s name.
its safe for mayweather to pick marquez rather than picking on cotto, pacquiao, mosley or even clottey. his butt will definitely get whooped… now if he losses to marquez, that’s another story. if he losses to marquez then he’s the dumbest boxer pound for pound!!!
can retire yet mayweather owes irs mills..marquez is sharp enough 2 pound on him like jesus chavez and castillo (n thr rematch floyd showed his colors) … floyd has been taught never fight with mexicans howevr jmm’s pressure and jab accuracy will get him the nod….
its the underdog that makes the fight interesting and exciting…
what the heck is this writer saying. mayweather will win. but the bout will suck cause they are both counter punchers. in terms of who fighting pacman next should not even be debated because either fight would be good ppv fights.
lilfloyd jr. is going to bully marquez from the getgo in this figth. i have seen it, floyd will be allover juan. this will be quick and short, floyd will send the message to pacman, that he ko juanma faster to answer for odh and rickyhatton destruction by pac.
i hope he does lose but i cant see it hes just tooooooooooo big he dont like a fair fight
mayweather lose? sheeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when he loses he has to retire because to promotion company would consider mayweather afterwards
i agree even i will not arrange a bout between a chihuahua against a rottweiler. no matter how brave the chihuahua or how big his warrior heart is.
lilfloyd will just jump on marquez, first in history where lilfloyd will actually be the offensive boxer. this figth maybe worth the ppv money just to watch floyd brave enough to bring the fight to his opponent for the firsttime ever.
he should retire if he WINS !! lol ..cause nobody wants to see him fight anyway…
let’s be realistic here, it’s 18 days to this match, and the truth really is that lilfloyd is just too big for juanma. faster, younger, and once again waaay bigger than the brave mexican. bloated marquez will be a sacraficed offering to the slaughter. you can describe the arrangement for this bout as wtf! are they thinkin’ gbp?
