Trout-Dawson in August

trout2By Dan Ambrose: Daniel Dawson (40-3-1, 26 KO’s) and former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-2, 14 KO’s) will be fighting in August at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, according to Fightnews.com. Trout’s once promising career as sunk in the mire recently with his back to back losses to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara in 2013, and he’s now in situation where he can ill afford another loss.

The Dawson vs. Trout fight could be a WBA junior middleweight eliminator bout with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger to champion Erislandy Lara. That would suit Trout fine because he wants to get a second shot at Lara after losing to him by a 12 round unanimous decision last year.

Trout almost beat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last year in April in a fight that was scored very generously in favor of Canelo by the judges working the fight.

Trout might have been able to win the fight had he not had to change his game plan after the scores of the fight were revealed after the 4th and 8th rounds due to the open scoring of the fight. Trout had to go from fighting defensively to fighting in an all-out fashion, which is not a style that is suited towards the non-punching Trout. He’s more of like a Floyd Mayweather type of fighter who does a lot better when boxing his opponents rather slugging with him.

Dawson, now 36, has beaten Alex Bunema, Eusebio Baluarte, Marco Tuhumury and Virgil Kalakoda in his last four fights. Dawson has never beaten anyone that you could call a good fighter. His win over the 38-year-old Bunema and Jason LeHoullier are by far the biggest wins of Dawson’s career, and that’s nothing special. Bunema likely would have knocked Dawson out if he were 7 years younger. This is the same Bunema that stopped a prime Roman Karmazin in the 10th round in 2008.
