Chavez Jr. a bad match-up for Froch

chavez91By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KO’s) wants a fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) for his next fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is a fight that Froch believes will give him a big payday with the fight being televised on pay-per-view in the U.S. The fact that Froch is selecting the 28-year-old Chavez Jr. for the fight instead of other talents like Andre Ward, Edwin Rodriguez or dare I saw the Dirrell brothers, suggests that Froch smells weakness in Chavez Jr.

I mean, I can’t see any other reason why Froch would want to fight Chavez Jr. if he wasn’t sniffing out some kind of flaw in Chavez Jr’s game that he thinks he could exploit. With Froch being so close to retirement and so guarded about his legacy, I believe he thinks that Chavez Jr. is flawed enough for him to beat him. But I think this is going to be Froch’s Waterloo.

This is really bad fight for Froch, because Chavez Jr. is all wrong for him. First off, Chavez Jr. has the best chin in boxing, and he’s utterly fearless to boot. This means that he’s not going to be running around the ring the way that George Groves did last Saturday night in trying not to get hit by Froch, and he’s definitely not going to get backed up against the ropes the way that Lucian Bute and Groves did in their knockout losses to Froch. Chavez Jr. will be backing Froch up constantly and working over with power shots to the head and body. Froch will literally have to get on his bike and start running for him to avoid getting chopped down like Andy Lee did when he thought he could fight Chavez Jr. in close.

The biggest thing that Chavez Jr. has going for him in this fight is his ability to work on the inside. Chavez Jr. is probably better than Andre Ward at fighting on the inside, and he’s going to force Froch to work on close whether he likes it or not. Froch can’t fight on the inside, he simply can’t. We saw that in his loss to Ward in 2011.

Once Ward took the fight to the inside, Froch was totally helpless to do anything about other than look at the referee for help. Froch has never fought anyone that attacked his body the way that Chavez Jr. will be doing. The guys that Froch has fought have been traditional head hunters that stood on the outside looking to nail him with a shot that they thought they could KO him. But Chavez Jr. is going to be right on Froch from the minute the fight starts and working his body over with the hardest body shots Froch has ever felt before.

The thing is Froch is 36-years-old, and he would be facing the best body puncher in the super middleweight division. This would be not only Froch’s first fight against a body puncher, but it would also be a fight against the very best body puncher. The outcome is just so obvious it’s not even funny. I see Froch getting massacred by Chavez Jr within 6-8 rounds, just like Andy Lee was. This in turn will lead to a rematch, because there’s no way Froch will retire after getting blasted out by Chavez Jr.
