Image: Adamek-Walker, Jennings-Koval & Cunningham-Gavern: Three decent but far from great fights on September 8thBy Dan Ambrose: The September 8th fight card headlined by heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (46-2, 28 KO’s) vs. Travis Walker (39-7-1, 31 KO’s) has some decent talent but mostly involved in mismatches at the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey.

Walker has good power but his chin isn’t great and he can both hurt and out-boxed fairly easily. However, the one thing that the 6’4 1/2″ Walker has is good power and he’s always capable of scoring a knockout at any given time if he can land one of his right hand solid.

Adamek will be vulnerable if he tries to slug with Walker. Adamek just can’t resist a certain amount of slugging no matte who he faces. If he tries that with Walker he could find himself on the canvas wondering what hit him.

In undercard action, 36-year-old former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham (24-4, 12 KO’s) will be moving up in weight to the heavyweight division to take on 35-year-old journeyman Jason Gavern (21-10-4, 10 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout.

Cunningham was recently beaten in back to back close fights against Yoan Pablo Hernandez.

It’s kind of doubtful that Cunningham will be able to do much at heavyweight other than getting a big payday if he can luck out by getting a world title shot against one of the Klitschko brothers. There’s a possibility because both Klitschko brothers have been taking on a series of overmatched opponents recently that you’d never would have imagined them fighting in the past. Cunningham would fit in real with Klitschko victims Jean Marc Mormeck, Tony Thompson and Alberto Sosnowski.

Unbeaten heavyweight contender #8 IBF Bryant Jennings (14-0, 6 KO’s) will be taking on journeyman Chris Koval (25-9, 18 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout. Jennings has been looking pretty good of late in beating Siarhei Liakhovich and Steve Collins. However, Jennings did struggle in defeating Maurice Byarm last January in a fight that was a very tough one for Jennings.
