Image: Ward looks to show his greatness against DawsonBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) will be looking to expand his greatness by showing that he’s not only the best fighter in the super middleweight division, but he’s also the best in the light heavyweight division if he can best chad Dawson (31-1, 17 KO’s) on September 8th at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California.

Although the Dawson-Ward fight won’t he held at light heavyweight, a win over Dawson will still pretty much show the world that Ward is the best fighter in the light heavyweight division.

Ward will have his hands full against Dawson, because big 6’3″ Chad has got very good size and his boxing skills are second to none. If Dawson can be mentally engaged for 12 rounds without any mental lapses, this fight could possibly go his way. However, I just don’t see Dawson being able to stay engaged mentally for that amount of time without zoning off and giving away the crucial rounds in the fight.

Dawson is good enough to win a lot of rounds when he’s motivated and doing what he has to do, but he has a bad habit of tuning out during important periods during his fights. He still was able to beat most of his opposition despite having this problem, but he won’t be able to defeat a talent like Ward unless he’s 100 percent mentally engaged the entire time.

Can Dawson stay focused 12 rounds? I think not. I’ve never seen a fight he’s been involved with where he didn’t at least tune out for three rounds at the minimum. It seems to be getting worse as he gets older where he loses concentration for four to five rounds, leaving him with only a small cushion to get his wins.

Either way, the Dawson-Ward fight is going to be thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish no matter who wins this fight.
