By Eric Baldwin: WBA World super middleweight champion Tyron Zeuge (19-0-1, 11 KOs) will be making his first defense of his title against #3 WBA challenger Isaac Ekpo (31-2, 24 KOs) on March 18 at the MBS Arena in Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany.

The 24-year-Zeuge recently won the WBA title with a 12th round knockout victory over WBA champion Giovanni De Carolis last November. The fact that Zeuge got a second chance at fighting De Carolis is a miracle, because he fought him to a 12 round draw in their first fight in July of last year.

Paul Smith to face WBA champion Tyron Zeuge on March 18

Image: Paul Smith to face WBA champion Tyron Zeuge on March 18

By Scott Gilfoid: In some quite bizarre news, 34-year-old former two-time world title challenger Paul Smith (38-6, 22 KOs) will be challenging WBA World super middleweight champion Tyson Zeuge (19-0-1, 11 KOs) for his title on March 18 at a still to be determined venue, according to Boxrec. What makes this fight seem all the more stranger is the fact that Smith isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies in the 168lb division at this time, and he’s lost three out of his last six fights in the last two years. Frankly, I’m stunned that Smith is getting ANOTHER world title shot. We’ve got talents like Jesse Hart, who has never fought for a world title before, and he’s ignored while Smith fights for his third world title in the last two years. What is up with that?

Paul Smith getting a title shot at this point in his career makes little sense. His record in his last six fights is 3-3. Can you imagine an NFL team going to the Super Bowl with a record of 8-8 on the season? I don’t understand how Smith could be considered for a world title shot with that kind of record. Zeuge looks like a very vulnerable champion, so I can understand why someone like Smith is getting the fight, but shouldn’t at least the World Boxing Association insist on Zeuge fight a contender rather than a 2nd tier fighter?

Tyron Zeuge vs. Giovanni De Carolis – Official weights

zeuge

By Allan Fox: WBA World super middleweight champion Giovanni De Carolis (24-6-1, 12 KOs) successfully made weight on Friday in weighing in at 166.7 pounds for his rematch against #6 WBA Tyron Zeuge (18-0-1, 10 KOs) for their rematch this Saturday night at the MBS Arena in Potsdam, Germany. The 24-year-old Zeuge weighed in at 167.6lbs.

Zeuge is lucky to be getting a rematch at all, because he appeared to lose to the 32-year-old De Carolis last July in their fight in Berlin, Germany. The German Zeuge was quite lucky to be given a draw in the fight, because he was out-punched the entire fight by the 6-foot Italian De Carolis.

Weights: Abraham vs. Lihaug & De Carolis vs. Zeuge

1-abraham

By Jeff Aranow: Former two division world champion Arthur Abraham (44-5, 28 KOs) weighed in at 168 pounds for his 12 round fight against #15 WBO Tim-Robin Lihaug (15-1, 8 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle, in Berlin, Germany. The 23-year-old Lihaug weighed in at 167.6lbs.

This is supposed to be a mismatch, but it’s hard to tell for sure because Abraham is starting to get long in the tooth at 36. Abraham was easily beaten in his last fight against Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez last April in a losing a 12 round unanimous decision. Ramirez, 24, is a good fighter, but he’s not as good as he looked in that fight.
