By Eric Baldwin: In a closely contested fight through 11 rounds, #6 WBA Tyron Zeuge (19-0-1, 11 KOs) defeated World Boxing Association ‘regular’ super middleweight champion Giovanni De Carolis (24-7-1, 12 KOs) by a 12th round knockout on Saturday night at the MBS Arena in Potsdam, Germany. The 24-year-old Zeuge knocked the 32-year-old De Carolis down twice in the 12th round.

The referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. stopped the contest after the 2nd knockdown despite the fact that no punch was landed. It appeared that the German fighter Zeuge bumped into De Carlos, and the referee thought it was a knockdown. De Carlos attempted to protest, but the referee stopped the fight anyway. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:41 of the 12th.

De Carlos landed the better shots in the fight throughout. He had the better power of the two. Zeuge frequently missed with his punches, even in the 12th. However, the German crowd cheered each time Zuege woud throw a shot, and that gave the appearance that he was doing better than he actually was. Zeuge lacked power on his shots. He looked really weak with the shots that he was throwing. They had nothing on them. De Carolis didn’t show much power either, but he was clearly the better puncher of the two.

De Carolis briefly fought on the outside in the 1st round. However, after discovering that Zeuge was the better fighter from the outside, De Carolis took the fight to the inside and stayed there the entire fight. Zeuge didn’t have a lot of boxing skills on the inside, and his power was even less of a factor with De Carolis close to him. Over and over, De Carolis was able to land nice shots to the head of Zeuge.

Zeuge looked good in the 9th in landing some nice shots. However, De Carolis connected with flurries in the 10th and 11th to appear to take those rounds. Boxing New 24 had De Carlos ahead at the time of the stoppage.

This was a rematch of the fight between De Carlos and Zeuge that took place earlier this year in July in Berlin, Germany. The judges scored that fight a draw. However, De Carolis looked like the much better fighter of the two. He outworked and out-landed Zeuge throughout the 12 round fight, but the fight took place in Germany. De Carolis obviously needed to do more than just beat Zeuge in that fight due the crowd cheering so loudly for the home fighter.

With this win, Zeuge and Felix Sturm hold the two WBA 168lb titles. Sturm is also a German fighter. He recently won a controversial decision over Fedor Chudinov.
