Hopkins wants Kovalev and Stevenson in 2014

hopkins6By Dan Ambrose: IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KO’s) says he wants to fight the top two 175 lb. champions Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev in 2014 before his 50th birthday in January 2015. Hopkins will be turning 49 next month, and he doesn’t have much time to set up and face both of these big punchers.

A loss for Hopkins to one of them will pretty much rule out a fight against the 2nd guy, especially if it’s a bad knockout loss for the soon to be 49-year-old.

“I think that it should be done before the summer of next year, and before I turn 50,” Hopkins said to RingTV. “The problem for them is that I like guys that come forward, and that people know that Bernard Hopkins does well with guys like them.

Who is the most feared man in boxing?

golovkin451By Jamie Eskdale: With it seemingly being easy to avoid threats in boxing I decided to have a look through the divisions and see who is being avoided. While looking 3 names quickly popped up. Sergey Kovalev seems to be avoided like the plague. It would seem no one in the light heavyweight division wants anything to do with the Russian. Kudos must go to Nathan Cleverly for making a voluntary WBO title defense against the heavy handed Kovalev though it turned out to be a mistake as Cleverly was decimated in a 4 round destruction.

Kovalev made it clear he was ready and willing to fight anyone in the division and unification fights against the other champions were his priority.

Stevenson-Bellew, Kovalev-Sillakh draws 1.3 million viewers on HBO

kovalev57By Allan Fox: Last Saturday’s card headlined by WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20 KO’s) vs. Tony Bellew (20-2-1, 12 KO’s) with WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (23-0-1, 21 KO’s) vs. Ismayl Sillakh (21-2, 17 KO’s) in the co-feature, reportedly drew 1.305 million viewers on HBO, according to Dan Rafael. These are big numbers and it proves that Stevenson is becoming a draw in the United States on HBO.

Having Kovalev on the undercard obviously helped because he’s picking up a lot of fans too with the way that he’s knocking out everyone he faces. However, most of the fans that tuned in were likely watching to see Stevenson fight because he’s better known than Kovalev in the U.S. from his previous fights against Chad Dawson and Chad Dawson.

Kovalev: I’m ready for Adonis Stevenson

kovalev6By Eric Thomas: WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (23-0-1, 21 KO’s) made a statement last night in stopping #15 WBO Ismayl Sillakh (21-2, 17 KO’s) in the 2nd round on HBO from the Colisee de Quebec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The win puts the 30-year-old Kovalev on course to face WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20 KO’s) in a fight that could take place next if HBO is willing to come up with the big money to get Stevenson to accept the fight.

That’s the one thing that will determine whether the Kovalev-Stevenson fight happens next or at some point down the road after the two fighters have exhausted all the possible smaller money fights they can take before facing each other.

Sergey Kovalev vs. Ismayl Sillakh on HBO this Saturday

kovalev56By Allan Fox: This Saturday night unbeaten WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KO’s) will be taking a decent test in his first title defense of his World Boxing Organization title against #15 WBO Ismayl Sillakh (21-1, 17 KO’s) on the undercard of the Adonis Stevenson vs.Tony Bellew card at the Colisee de Quebeck, Quebec City, Canada.

Sillakh, 6’1″, has good size and excellent skills. He’s a very mobile fighter and reminds one of a shorter, lighter version of Wladimir Klitschko, but without his power and size. The 28-year-old Sillakh’s career hit a speed bump last year when he was stopped by Russian Denis Grachev in the 8th round in a fight that Sillakh was dominating at the time of the stoppage.

Cleverly badly wants rematch with Kovalev

cleverly677By Scott Gilfoid: Last month former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KO’s) faced his first good opponent in his career in Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KO’s) and Cleverly was then promptly stopped in the 4th round by the hard hitting Russian. Cleverly is now saying he wants to face Kovalev again in a rematch, and he wants it to be his next fight in early 2014 if Kovalev will agree to it.

I’m not sure if Cleverly should take this fight because he looked like a punching bag against Kovalev the entire short 4-round fight. About the best that Cleverly could do was throw jabs, and that wasn’t going to be enough to hold back a puncher like Kovalev.

Bellew: Cleverly would have beaten Kovalev if he used his speed and movement

cleverly4544By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew thinks former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly would have beaten undefeated Sergey Kovalev last Saturday night had Cleverly chosen to flash his hand speed, and use his mobility against the tough Russian. Bellew believes Cleverly fought the wrong game plan choosing not to move a lot, and box.

Bellew said on his social media site “I stand by my original judgment of Kovalev. He’s very strong, but look closely. His power covers many mistakes. He won’t be the champ long. I’m pretty sure they’ll have a rematch clause in there. If he [Cleverly] used his speed and movement, he would have won IMO [in my opinion]. You don’t bang with a banger.”

Cleverly thought he was doing well against Kovalev before getting hurt

cleverly677By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KO’s) thinks he won the 2nd round and was en route to winning the 3rd round in his fight against Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KO’s) last Saturday night when tragedy struck with Kovalev hurting Cleverly in the 3rd.

Kovalev ended up dropping Cleverly twice in the 3rd round, and then once more in the 4th round to get the TKO.

Cleverly said to the southwalesargus “I thought I’d just let Kovalev have the first round and I thought I edged the second round and started to win the 3rd round, and then I got caught.

Cleverly not sure if he’ll continue his career

cleverly777By Scott Gilfoid: It seems that former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly’s 4th round TKO loss to the talented Russian knockout artist Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KO’s) last Saturday night in front of Cleverly’s own fans at the has negatively Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom has effected Cleverly more than what some people originally thought it would.

Cleverly, 26, is hinting that he could retire from boxing after his loss to Kovalev. Cleverly is going away on vacation, and he’s going to do a lot of soul searching to decision whether to continue fighting or wrap up his career and move onto other things. Cleverly has a math degree, and he can make a lot of money if he goes back to school to become an engineer. He doesn’t need boxing.
