Cleverly thought he was doing well against Kovalev before getting hurt

cleverly677By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KO’s) thinks he won the 2nd round and was en route to winning the 3rd round in his fight against Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KO’s) last Saturday night when tragedy struck with Kovalev hurting Cleverly in the 3rd.

Kovalev ended up dropping Cleverly twice in the 3rd round, and then once more in the 4th round to get the TKO.

Cleverly said to the southwalesargus “I thought I’d just let Kovalev have the first round and I thought I edged the second round and started to win the 3rd round, and then I got caught. And once he hurt me, he sensed that and he just went for the kill. He’s got a good killer instinct on him, and he took his chance…It’s a shame I didn’t get to take him into my part of the fight, the second half.”

It’s interesting how fighters reshape history to the point where it doesn’t jibe with reality. For anyone who saw the Cleverly-Kovalev fight, there was no point at all where Cleverly was doing well, and definitely he never came close to winning any round. It was nonstop punching from Kovalev for 4 rounds.

Where in the world did Cleverly get the idea he edged the 2nd round and was in the process of winning the 3rd? The fight I saw was like Custer’s last stand with Kovalev nailing Cleverly at will with arrow-like shots in all of the rounds, not just the 1st. It was sickening the way Kovalev was using Cleverly’s head as a punching bag in the 2nd and 3rd round.

How did Cleverly come up with the idea that he was beating Kovalev in the 2nd and 3rd? That’s totally hilarious. I mean, I know fighters tend to see things going their way when they fight, but come on, how does Cleverly not know that he was getting smacked around like a rag doll by Kovalev?
