Schaefer says Robert Guerrero’s contract with Golden Boy is valid

guerrero2453By Dan Ambrose: If Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) wants to get out of his contract with Golden Boy Promotions then he’s going to need to prove to the arbitrator with the California State Athletic Commission that there are holes in the contract that will enable him to squeeze out of it. If not, then Guerrero will be tied with Golden Boy for several more years, which will almost surely take the 30-year-old Guerrero to the end of his prime years as a boxer.

It’s thought by some boxing fans that Guerrero is just trying to get out of his contract with Golden Boy Promotions so that he can try and get a big money fight Manny Pacquiao. That can’t happen while he’s with Golden Boy, and he already got big money fight against Golden Boy’s top fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Schaefer wants Broner vs. Mayweather mega-fight

0000(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer isn’t content with his young star WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) slowly climbing his way to the top to become a mega pay-per-view star.

Schaefer wants to hurry it along by having Broner face the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) in 2014. But the thing is, Schaefer needs the boxing public to help him out by creating pressure on the two fighters to face each other in the ring, because both of them are good friends.

Schaefer giving Cotto another week to decide on Canelo

cotto552By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is giving 33-year-old Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) another week to decide whether he’ll accept the $10 million+ offer that he made to him to face former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) in March or not.

If Cotto doesn’t get back to him by then, Schaefer will move on and look to match Canelo against either IBF 154 lb. champion Carlos Molina or the winner of this Saturday’s fight between Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara.

Cotto reportedly was given a big money offer by Top Rank for him to fight WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) on June 7th at Madison Square Garden, in New York, New York. Cotto might end up taking that fight rather than facing Canelo.

Schaefer: Khan’s April 20th date may be pushed forward one week

khan432 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s thinking of moving Amir Khan’s April 20th fight date on Showtime to a different date, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Golden Boy is having problems trying to find an opponent face Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s), as they’ve been targeting mostly welterweights and trying to get them to drain down to fight Khan at 140.

The latest name that is being mentioned as a serious opponent for Khan is 33-year-old former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s), who’s not ranked in the top 15 at 140 or 147. Khan could be facing Diaz as the third fight on the undercard of the Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah fight.

Schaefer saying Canelo-Trout still isn’t a done deal

alvarez4By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is saying the May 4th unification bout between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA 154 lb. champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) still isn’t a done deal, according to Dan Rafael.

However, the fact that Canelo is tweeting that the fight is happening on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las, Nevada, is good enough for me to know that it WILL be happening.

It’s unclear what loose ends Schaefer still has to tie up in order for the Canelo-Trout to be official, but it can’t be that big of a deal for Canelo to already be letting the cat out of the bag by leaking the news ahead of Schaefer and Golden Boy.

Mayweather’s May 4th fight expected to be finalized this week, says Schaefer

floyd454By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr’s fight on May 4th is expected to be finalized this week, according to Lance Pugmire of the LA Times. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told the LA Times that Mayweather’s fight will be finalized by this week. However, Schaefer isn’t saying who it is just yet.

Pugmire is guessing that it’ll be Robert Guerrero, but anything is possible with Mayweather. He already said earlier today on his twitter that the Guerrero fight is just a rumor and nothing more. Why would Mayweather go through the trouble of saying that if Guerrero is going to be the guy he ends up facing on May 4th?

That would be kind of silly because it’s not as if Mayweather has competition for Guerrero. He’s the only one that Guerrero could get a big money fight against, so it would be really odd if Mayweather is deliberately trying to throw boxing fans off.

Schaefer doesn’t see Canelo vs. Trout taking place

trout45By Dan Ambrose: Despite WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout’s comments that a fight between him and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is close to being made for May 4th. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, the promoter for Alvarez, says he doubts that fight will take place. He does say that Trout is one of the options that he’s considering for Alvarez’s next fight date, but it’s still not likely.

Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix said on his twitter “Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer tells SI that NoDoubtsTrout is ‘being considered’ for Canelo but ‘at this point, don’t think it will happen.’”

Trout replied to the twitter, saying “There you go y’all kill all that excitement.”

Schaefer: I’ve always believed Khan can become a top pound-for-pound fighter in the world

003KhanvictoryIMG_5867(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By William Mackay: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was really pleased with Amir Khan’s comeback win over Carlos Molina last Saturday night in Los Angeles. Khan gave the smaller Molina a real beating en route to a 10th round stoppage. The fight was the equivalent of watching Khan hit a little heavy bag with arms. It was that one-sided, and you can commend Schaefer on his skillful matchmaking or damn for putting such a fight like this together.

Schaefer said this after Khan’s fight as quoted by Lance Pugmire “I’ve always believed in Amir Khan, and I’ve always believed he can be a top pound for pound fighter in the world.”

Schaefer: Canelo-Cotto still a possibility

Image: Schaefer: Canelo-Cotto still a possibilityBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that there’s a good chance that Miguel Cotto will wind up facing WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next instead of the logical choice of Alvarez facing Trout in a unification bout. Trout himself said won’t be surprised if Canelo and Golden Boy choose not to face him next.

Scahefer said at the Cotto-Trout press conference “The 154 pound division is very deep. We’ll sit down with Miguel. There’s a still a possibility we’ll see Canelo-Cotto fight. We’ll see if Trout is a possibility. There are other names at 154 we’re going to be looking at, whether it’s James Kirkland or Alfredo Angulo or any of these guys.”

Schaefer: Berto will be fighting for a world title in 2013

Image: Schaefer: Berto will be fighting for a world title in 2013By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer believes that his fighter former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) will bounce back from his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision loss to Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) and will be fighting for a world title in the near future.

Schaefer said to RingTV “Andre Berto has a lot to be proud of. He will be back, and he will be back, bigger, better and stronger. I am convinced that he will be fighting for a world title again in 2013.”

Now that’s a scary thought. But the sad truth is that Berto probably will be fighting for a world title for Golden Boy in 2013. After all, Golden Boy is matching 35-year-old Zab Judah against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia next year on February 9th in a fight that few boxing fans see as a competitive match-up or even close to being a competitive fight.
