de la hoya33By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya finally came forward today to make a statement following the resignation of Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer this week, but instead of directly addressing that issue, De La Hoya merely sent a positive message that came across as a pep talk of sorts.

Here’s what De La Hoya said: “Golden Boy Promotions is moving ahead on all fronts. We look forward to continuing and expanding our key position in the boxing world and to providing the public with the very best the sport has to offer.”

Change is good for Oscar and Schaefer

By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: Change can be good. It’s never bad unless one mismanages his/her time while making the change. The abrupt stepping down of Richard Schaefer as CEO of Golden Boy Promotions has done just that; brought about change. I refuse to side with either because I don’t know where either would be without each other.

Could Richard Schaefer be collateral damage in the Cold War?

schaefer2By Robbie Bannatyne: There has much been speculation recently about the internal conflict within Golden Boy Promotions, said to be the result of fissures in the relationship between Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer. At the same time, rumours also abound that De La Hoya has made attempts to bury the hatchet with Bob Arum by going to meet the Top Rank boss at his house recently.

Regardless of whether Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya make peace and decide to re-establish a working relationship, the issue between the feuding television networks Showtime and HBO is still not resolved. Still, if De La Hoya and Bob Arum could recapture the bond that was broken throughout their conflict it would certainly be a step in the right direction.

Schaefer: I have no interest in dealing with Bob Arum

schaefer2By Chris Williams: Earlier this week Golden Boy Promotions president and chief shareholder Oscar De La Hoya said that he has no problems working with Bob Arum of Top Rank, and that he’s interested in putting a fight together between Golden Boy promoted fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Arum’s top fighter Manny Pacquiao.

Well, it looks like that’s not going to happen unless De La Hoya makes a move to convince Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer because he still has no interest in working with Arum. Schaefer is saying he runs Golden Boy unless Oscar wants to fire him.

In-Fighting: Signs of division in Golden Boy slowly showing up

delahoya92By Raj Parmar: Back in 2007, then super welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya faced off against Floyd Mayweather in one of the richest fights in boxing history. The fight was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions (founded by De La Hoya in 2002) and a heated build up between Oscar and Mayweather ensued, so much that there is still high tension between the two to this day.

Both Oscar and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer were greatly disappointed when Mayweather pulled out a split decision win, as Oscar and Richard were very close personally and professionally at this point.

Schaefer intrigued by Mayweather vs. Porter fight possibility

porter03By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) made a name for himself last Saturday night in destroying a still very good Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KO’s) in a 4th round TKO victory on Showtime. The victory showed clearly that Porter is one of the best fighters in the 147lb division, and he’s ready for bigger fights against the big names in the division.

Porter’s promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions says he likes the idea of matching him against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the future, and he thinks it would be a great fight.

Schaefer: Canelo could have made weight for Angulo fight if a title were up for grabs

02 Canelo and Angulo IMG_1618(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer explained away his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s inability to make weight for his fight tonight against Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) by saying that Canelo could have made the 154 lb limit had a title belt been on the line. To Schaefer, Canelo would have made the effort to get down to the junior middleweight limit if he had a reason to. Canelo now has to make the 168 lb re-hydration limit for today otherwise he’ll need to give Angulo a little more money. Canelo gave Angulo $100,000 yesterday for having the weight moved up from 154 to 155.

If Canelo can’t make 168, then one would guess that Angulo will get another chunk of change to make it worth his while to be facing a guy heavier than him. Canelo rehydrated to 172 for his junior middleweight fight last year against Austin Trout, so that gives you an idea of how heavy he can bulk up to after he hydrates following a weigh-in.
