Schaefer says Robert Guerrero’s contract with Golden Boy is valid

guerrero2453By Dan Ambrose: If Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) wants to get out of his contract with Golden Boy Promotions then he’s going to need to prove to the arbitrator with the California State Athletic Commission that there are holes in the contract that will enable him to squeeze out of it. If not, then Guerrero will be tied with Golden Boy for several more years, which will almost surely take the 30-year-old Guerrero to the end of his prime years as a boxer.

It’s thought by some boxing fans that Guerrero is just trying to get out of his contract with Golden Boy Promotions so that he can try and get a big money fight Manny Pacquiao. That can’t happen while he’s with Golden Boy, and he already got big money fight against Golden Boy’s top fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. There’s no one else in Golden Boy’s stable that can give Guerrero another big payday like the one he got against Mayweather. But there is with Top Rank if Guerrero can get out of his contract with Golden Boy and land a big money fight against Pacquiao.

In an interview last month with the Philippine Star, Guerrero said this about him fighting Pacquiao: “Neither of us will be running. Everyone knows the fight will have fireworks. And I do believe the fans want to see us fight so they can make their own comparison…You want to see an explosive fight. When Mayweather feels threatened, he gets on his bike and runs. When Manny feels threatened, he fights toe-to-toe.”

Based on this interview, it would seem that Guerrero is interested in fighting Pacquiao now. Guerrero won’t be able to get another fight with Mayweather, because it was too one-sided, so it’s pointless for him to call out Mayweather over and over again like he did to get the fight with him the first place. If Guerrero were to do that now, he’d just look silly and no one would take him seriously anymore. But with Pacquiao, that’s a whole different star that Guerrero can try and workout a fight against, but he can’t do it with him under contract with Golden Boy.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said this to RingTV “I believe strongly that he [Guerrero] continues to be under contract with Golden Boy, and I will continue to work hard and give Robert the best possible fights…He’s saying that the contract is not valid. I am saying that it is.”

It’s going to be interesting to see if Guerrero can get out of the contract. The thing is if Guerrero gets out of the contract and he’s unable to get a big money fight against Pacquiao – or whoever he has his eyes set on for a big fight – then he’ll have burned his bridges with Golden Boy, and they have a quite a few top fighters that he probably wouldn’t be fighting.

Unlike some fighters that are blessed with blazing hand speed and power, Guerrero is just a straight up fighter who wins by throwing more punches than his opponents. It’s doubtful that he’ll be able to win fights like this when his current contract ends with Golden Boy, and he can move on to try and right whoever it is that he’s eager fight right now.
