Mathews expects to destroy Luke Campbell

mathews4

By Scott Gilfoid: 2012 Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell (14-1, 11 KOs) could be in for a world of hurt on Saturday night when he defends his WBC Silver lightweight strap against the far more experienced Derry Mathews (38-10-2, 20 KOs) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Mathews says that Campbell has never been inside the ring in the pro ranks with a puncher like himself, and he’s never had to take power shots like the ones he’s going to be continually bouncing off his chin on Saturday night.

Mathews feels that his power is going to put Campbell on the canvas and keep him there. Mathews, 33, points out that Campbell has already been dropped twice in his still young pro career, and that wasn’t even against big punchers. Mathews feels there’s a weakness there in Campbell’s chin that he can take advantage of on Saturday night to get the lanky 5’9” fighter out of there.

Luke Campbell vs. Derry Mathews this Saturday

campbell

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver lightweight champion Luke Campbell (14-1, 11 KOs) will be defending his title this Saturday night against former lightweight world title challenger Derry Mathews (38-10-2, 20 KOs) this Saturday night in a toss-up fight on the undercard of the Tony Bellew vs. BJ Flores card at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Campbell has been matched pretty easily since his 12 round split decision loss to Yvan Mendy last December in London. Campbell, 29, has won his last two fights against Gary Sykes and Argenis Mendez. The fight against 30-year-old former IBF World super featherweight champion Mendez was supposed to have been a step up, but it really wasn’t.

Luke Campbell vs. Derry Mathews on October 15

By Scott Gilfoid: #5 WBC lightweight contender Luke Campbell (14-1, 11 KOs) will be fighting former world title challenger Derry Mathews (38-10-2, 20 KOs) on October 15 in a scheduled 12 round bout on the undercard of the cruiserweight match-up between WBO champion Tony Bellew and BJ Flores at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

It’s a decent fight between fringe level lightweights. Neither of these guys will likely ever win a world title at lightweight unless it’s an ideal situation where they’re facing a vulnerable champion like Anthony Crolla. The winner of the Campbell vs. Mathews fight wont really prove anything though. If you feed either of these guys to Mikey Garcia, it’s going to be a real massacre in my view. Campbell-Mathews is more of a domestic level fight than anything.

Mathews, 32, has a very good chance of beating Campbell if he puts the pressure on him and keeps it on him. Campbell’s chin is suspect, and he doesn’t react well to getting hit at the pro level.

What’s next after last Saturday night

1-WardBarrera_Hoganphotos3By Gav Duthie: There was quite an interesting night of boxing on Saturday night with action in the UK and US. Its been a relatively quiet March and although my interest was registered last night all of the fights were predictable in their outcomes. The question is what next for these talents.

Luke Campbell vs. Gary Sykes on March 26 on Brook-Bizier card

campbell5By Scott Gilfoid: The recently beaten lightweight Luke Campbell (12-1, 10 KOs) will be fighting next month on March 26 against the 32-year-old Gary Sykes (28-4, 6 KOs) on the undercard of the Kell Brook vs. Kevin Bizier card at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, UK.

The Campbell-Sykes fight will be the co-feature, unbelievably. It’s not a great fight for a co-feature bout. I realize that the 28-year-old Campbell was soundly beaten in his last fight by Yvan Mendy last December by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision, but I would still expect to see better match-making than this for a co-feature bout on the Brook vs. Bizier fight.

It makes little sense if Campbell is going to be thrown ion with a fodder opponent for the Brook vs. Bizier fight. Heck, the main event is bad enough in terms of being a mismatch, but then to add an equally bad mismatch between Campbell and Sykes. But who knows? It might turn out to be a competitive fight between Campbell and Sykes.

Chris Eubank Jnr sealed with a kiss

eubank33333By John Spandley: Saturday nights show at the O2 arena promised fireworks on many fronts with a talented and stacked undercard and fireworks we sure had.

The whole show from start to finish was pure boxing gold and value for money the British public have seldom seen when spending there hard earned money on a PPV event. I must admit I was one of the sceptic’s that was far from happy to pay for an event with no world titles up for grabs. For that I stand corrected and take my hat off to matchroom for a very well matched card.

We witnessed the “The Bomber” Bellew clinch the European title with a gritty hard fought victory over a game and talented but under rated fighter that is Masternak. Both men fought hammer and tongs in this fight and it proved that the Liverpudlian just had more in his locker when it came to skill set.

Luke Campbell to fight on Joshua-Whyte undercard

campbell5By Scott Gilfoid: #8 WBC, #10 IBF lightweight contender and 2012 Olympic gold medalist for Britain Luke Campbell (12-0, 10 KOs) has been added to the December 12th card headlined by heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

It’s still unknown who the 27-year-old Campbell will be fighting on the card, but hopefully for his sake it’s an upgrade from his last opponent Tommy Coyle, who Campbell effortlessly beat last August in stopping him in the 10th round.
