What’s next after last Saturday night

1-WardBarrera_Hoganphotos3By Gav Duthie: There was quite an interesting night of boxing on Saturday night with action in the UK and US. Its been a relatively quiet March and although my interest was registered last night all of the fights were predictable in their outcomes. The question is what next for these talents.

Chris Eubank Jnr

25 years on from his father unwittingly putting Michael Watson in a coma his son has done the same thing. Eubank Jnr has wished his opponent Nick Blackwell a speedy recovery as he is in an induced coma to reduce swelling for bleeding in his skull. Our thoughts are with Nick and his family. Eubank is the mandatory challenger to Daniel Jacobs for his WBA title. Now that he has fought the best British boxers it looks like Jacobs could be next.

Kell Brook

Anything but an IBF mandatory. There is talk of unification which includes Danny Garcia and Jessie Vargas (Thurman is unavailable). I can’t see it happening though because Brook is now the longest reigning welterweight champion. The others haven’t even made a defence yet so I would be surprised if they were allowed to unify. Other possible opponents I would like include Miguel Cotto, Lamont Peterson, Juan Manuel Marquez and Errol Spence Jnr (Who could be his next mandatory).

Andre Ward

I really thought Barrera would be a tough fight for him but it wasn’t. Kovalev is talking about fighting Ward in November as they both have obligations for the summer. I think to prepare Ward should face an experienced top 15 light heavyweight like Jean Pascal, Andrzej Fonfara or Isaac Chilemba and then Kovalev at the end of the year.

Luke Campbell

It was a nice confidence booster for Olympic gold medalist Campbell after losing to Mendy in his last outing. It would have been nice to score an early knockout but I would imagine Eddie Hearn and his team would have been looking for a few more rounds from the normally durable Gary Sykes. He could try for a rematch but I think he should target a few more British fighters first.
