Canelo STILL saying fans will get “big surprise” for Smith fight

Image: Canelo STILL saying fans will get “big surprise” for Smith fight

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) is starting to sound like a parrot with the way he’s repeating over and over that his boxing fans will be getting a “big surprise” when they tune in for his title shot against WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) on September 17 on HBO pay-per-view.

Smith is an underdog in this fight, so it’s hard to see it as kind of surprise if Canelo beats him. A surprise would be Canelo losing the fight or if him making a big announcement of a fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. But beating Smith won’t be a surprise.

“I think people are going to be very surprised that day,” said Canelo to Fighthpe.com. “We are going to put on a great event and a great fight. We will give everyone a big surprise. I want people to be happy because these are very important dates for me. Mexican Independence Day is very important to me to represent my country and we will give everyone a big surprise. It’s very important for me,” said Canelo.

Liam Smith: I’m going to stop Canelo

Hoganphotos6

By Dan Ambrose: WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) doesn’t want to leave anything to chance against the highly popular Mexican fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) on September 17 in their fight on HBO pay-per-view at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Smith takes issue with him being viewed as a “paper champion” in the minds of many boxing fans, and he wants to show them that he’s not a paper belt holder by him beating the 26-year-old Canelo. However, even if Smith does defeat Canelo, it won’t stop fans from seeing him as a paper champion, because there are arguably better champions at 154 than Canelo in the Charlo brothers and Erislandy Lara.

Canelo vs. Smith tale of the tape

canelo

By Dan Ambrose: The 5’9” Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) will be giving up a little in the way of height to the 5’10” WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) in their fight in less than a month from now on September 17 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. In the tale of the tape, Canelo has a three inch reach advantage at 72 inches compared to Smith’s 69”.

You can bet that Canelo will be looking to take advantage of his reach by jabbing on the outside as much as possible. Canelo, 26, has a good jab, and he likes to use it to avoid getting hit when he faces guys that have shorter arms. Smith, 27, is going to need to get in close for him to land his big body shots. That’s where Smith has a real chance of winning this fight, because Canelo’s main weakness is his ability take hard body punches.

Canelo can be out-boxed by faster guys with good mobility. That obviously isn’t something that Smith is going to be able to do, because he’s not very fast on his feet. Smith likes to bang with big power shots, and never hard to find in the ring.

Canelo: I know I can beat Golovkin

Image: Canelo: I know I can beat Golovkin

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) took a lot of heat from the boxing world this year when he chose not to defend his WBC middleweight title against his mandatory challenger “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs). Canelo dropped the belt rather than defend it against Golovkin and potentially lose the title inside the ring by a knockout.

Canelo is now saying he knows he can beat Golovkin when the two fighters face each other. Canelo isn’t saying that’s going to happen. The only thing he’s saying is that his promoters Golden Boy made contact with Golovkin’s promoters to discuss a fight and they were unable to come up with an agreement.

Canelo says he has a “big surprise” for fans on September 17

Image: Canelo says he has a “big surprise” for fans on September 17

By Dan Ambrose: Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) says he’ll be revealing a big surprise for the fans on September 17 when he gets inside the ring with WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Just what that surprise is has many boxing fans guessing.

Will Canelo finally announce that he’s fighting IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin to show the fans that he’s not afraid of him, or does he merely mean that his win over Smith will be the big surprise. If that’s the case, then it won’t be much of a surprise because a lot of fans are already picking Canelo to win the fight.

Liam Smith says he’ll beat the “bully” Canelo Alvarez

canelo3

By Dan Ambrose: WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) says he’s ready to beat the “bully” Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) next month in their fight on September 17 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Smith says that boxing fans see Canelo as a monster, but he’s not. Smith points out that he’s bigger than the 5’9” Canelo.

Smith figures that he can fight exactly like Canelo in trading body shots to get the better of him on the night. Above all, Smith, 27, wants to give Canelo a loss so that he can make some life changing money in the rematch when Canelo comes around looking to avenge his loss.

Canelo can’t walk away from a loss to Smith, because this isn’t the type of fight that the Mexican star can walk away from like he did with his controversial 12 round decision over Erislandy Lara in 2014. Canelo appeared to lose to Lara in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans, but the judges gave him a 12 round split decision.

Gabriel Rosado vs. Willie Monroe Jr on September 17

monroe

By Dan Ambrose: Middleweights Willie Monroe Jr. (20-2, 6 KOs) and Gabriel Rosado (23-9, 13 KOs) have been added to the September 17 undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Liam Smith card on HBO pay-per-view from the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Monroe Jr. and Rosado will be fighting a 12 round fight.

Golden Boy Promotions is obviously putting the Rosado vs. Monroe fight together to build up the winner as a future opponent for their flagship fighter Canelo Alvarez. Rosado was one of the potential opponents for Canelo’s September fight. They went with unbeaten World Boxing Organization Liam Smith instead so that Canelo could win a title.

Saunders won’t be fighting on Canelo vs. Smith card

saunders5533

By Dan Ambrose: Billy Joe Saunders has turned down fights against a number of middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s past victims, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be defending his World Boxing Organization middleweight title on the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Liam Smith card on September 17. What a pity.

I can’t say I’m surprised. I mean, it’s not as if Saunders didn’t already have tons of opportunities to defend his WBO strap. According to Dan Rafael, Saunders turned down fights against the following top middleweights: Gabriel Rosado, Curtis Stevens, and Willie Monroe Jr. Saunders opted not to fight Golovkin in the past.

“Per @Golden Boy Boxing, Saunders won’t be on the Canelo=Smith PPV because he turned down a fight with Gabe Rosado. #boxing. “”Golden Boy also said when names such as Curtis Stevens and Willie Monroe were suggested for Saunders to fight they were also turned down. Golden Boy also said when names such as Curtis Stevens and Willie Monroe were suggested for Saunders to fight they were also turned down. Saunders ran from GGG and now he’s turning down all his victims too (Stevens, Rosado, Monroe). lol,”

Canelo vs. Smith: Will this fight sell?

canelo111

By Scott Gilfoid: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has decided to dip down in weight to drain to 154 to fight little known WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith next month on September 17 at At&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. HBO has given the Canelo vs. Smith fight the green light to be televised on pay-per-view with their network despite the 27-year-old Smith not being a recognizable name to the average casual boxing fan in the U.S.

Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions might as well have selected some hopeless 2nd tier fighter for him to fight because it’s pretty much the equivalent of the guy that he’ll be facing next month in Smith.

Roach: Canelo vs. Smith will be competitive

canelo700

By Dan Ambrose: Liam Smith could prove to be a more difficult obstacle than many boxing fans expect him to be when he defends his WBO junior middleweight title next month against Golden Boy Promotion’s flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) on September 17 on HBO pay-per-view from AT&T Arena in Arlington, Texas.

The unbeaten Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) is seen as an easy mark for the 26-year-old Canelo in the eyes of a lot of fans, many of which who have already written him off without having even seen him fight before. One person who has seen the 27-year-old Smith fight in the past is trainer Freddie Roach, who sees him as a very tough fight for Canelo.
