Mikey Garcia willing to negotiate fight with Yuriorkis Gamboa

mikey55By Chris Williams: Getting booed from start to finish, WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) did what he had to do for him to beat Juan Carlos Burgos (30-2-2, 20 KO’s) tonight by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Madison Square Garden Theater, in New York, New York, USA. There weren’t any knockdowns in the fight, but Mikey almost went down in the 2nd round when he was hit by a left hook that he never saw coming from Burgos.

Like always, Mikey showed good power with both hands, and he probably would have scored a stoppage if he had pushed hard for it in the 2nd half of the fight. But Mikey looked like he didn’t want to take any chances of getting caught with something while going for the knockout.

Garcia beats Burgos; Jennings stops Szpilka

mikey5656By Dan Ambrose: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) defeated #1 WBO challenger Juan Carlos Burgos (30-2-2, 20 KO’s) by a boring 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden Theater, in New York, New York, USA. The final judges scores were 118-110, 118-110, 119-109. Mikey was booed in many of the rounds for his timid way of fighting, and it was sad to see him failing to impress the crowd.

It’s going to be interesting to see what the executives at HBO say about putting Mikey’s fights on their network in the future. If they feel that Guillermo Rigondeaux has a non-crowd pleasing style, then you have to wonder what they feel about Mikey after tonight. I think Rigondeaux is a lot more entertaining to watch than what we saw from Mikey in this fight.

Mikey Garcia looks thin and small at weigh-in for Burgos fight

garcia8888(Photo credit: Carlos Baeza/Thompson Boxing) By Dan Ambrose: In looking at how thin and small-boned WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) appeared at the weigh-in on Friday for his fight on Saturday night against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s), Top Rank promoter Bob Arum needs to re-think the idea of having Mikey move up to the 140 lb. division to face Manny Pacquiao or any of the top guys in that weight class.

Mikey doesn’t have the build to fight Pacquiao, and I don’t see him being able to move up in weight successfully by September or any time.

Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Carlos Burgos next Saturday

garcia55By Dan Ambrose: Next Saturday night WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) will be making his first and likely his last title defense against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden in New York. The idea here is for Mikey to move up to lightweight and get in a fight or two and then move to light welterweight in September to possibly get a fight with Manny Pacquiao if it looks like he’ll be leaving Top Rank’s stable at the end of the year.

Mikey’s has said he’d like to unify titles at super featherweight and lightweight, but clearly if he bothers to do this then he could be closing the door on him getting a shot against Pacquiao if he chooses to leave Top Rank. Mikey has to move quickly to move up to 140 just in case Pacquiao decides he won’t re-sign with Top Rank.

Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Carlos Burgos on HBO on Jan. 25th at MSG

garcia56By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has set up a fight between WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) and Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO’s) in a fight televised by HBO on January 25th at Madison Square Garden. Arum wasn’t interested in matching Mikey against Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa, which would seem to have been a much better fight than this mismatch. Burgos is a fighter that has held to draws in his last two fights against Roman Martinez and Yakubu Amidu.

Arum said to RingTV “That [Garcia-Burgos] is done for Madison Square Garden. The contracts have been sent out today.”
