Schaefer: Broner still has a long-term contract with Golden Boy
By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer reportedly isn’t pleased with the news that Curtis Jackson aka “50 Cent”, is interested in signing WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) to his SMS Promotions stable.
There had been previous talk about the 23-year-old Broner’s contract with Golden Boy expiring next month in April, but Scaefer is saying that’s not that case. He says Broner is still under a long-term contract with Golden Boy and Al Haymon, his adviser.
De La Hoya: Doesn’t HBO know Golden Boy is stacked with talent?
By Allan Fox: Oscar De La Hoya was surprised with HBO’s move made earlier today to sever ties with Golden Boy Promotions fighters, and no longer televise their fights. De La Hoya, the president of the company a former star for HBO that made them millions of dollars during professional and promotional career, sees it as a self-defeating move by HBO due to Golden Boy having so many talented fighters in their stable.
De La Hoya said on his social media site: “Game on!! I am so pumped to bring all the great fights to @SHOsports and CBS. Good luck With your captain sailing you through the Dead Sea…I’m surprised @HBOboxing would make such a bold move. Don’t they know GBP is stacked with talent?”
Khan’s December 15th fight could wind up on Showtime instead of HBO
By William Mackay: Steve Kim is reporting that former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan’s next fight on December 15th could possibly wind up on Showtime instead of HBO, which is where Khan has been fighting regularly for the past couple of years. With his loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last July, Khan’s contract with HBO ran out. There were reports that Khan possibly could continue fighting for HBO. However, we could be seeing Khan with Showtime instead.
The reason this is significant is because of the timing involved. Khan has been beaten in his last two fights and his career is at a crossroads where his next fight could us a lot about which direction Khan will go – further down or back up. It’s no secret that HBO doesn’t like to put on fluff fights for the boxing public. In other words, they tend to be very picky about the kinds of fights that they agree to have televised on their network. They’re a lot more selective about fights than they used to be, and it could be that Khan might have problems in getting his next opponent approved by them.
Khan’s next fight likely to be on HBO on December 15th
By William Mackay: Amir Khan’s contract with HBO has run out as of his 4th round TKO loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last July. However, HBO is still interested in televising Khan’s next fight on December 15th on the network, according to RingTV.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told RingTV “Amir Khan wants to fight on December 15th, we are currently having conversations with HBO about structured dates, money and opponents.”
