Golovkin glad to be fighting Geale on 7/26 at MSG, in New York

golovkin566(Photo by Will Hart) By Allan Fox: After seven years as a pro, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) will be fighting his first well-known opponent in former IBF/WBA 160-pound champion Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) in their “G4” card next month on July 26th on HBO from Madison Square Garden in New York. While Geale obviously isn’t as popular as guys like Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez, he is a big step up from the guys that Golovkin has been fighting up until now in terms of visibility and fighting technique.

Golovkin is quite pleased to be getting the fight with Geale, and he’s hoping that this fight will lead to bigger ones against the likes of Cotto, Peter Quillin, Sam Soliman and Carl Froch.

Geale: a victory over Golovkin will get back where I want to be

golovkin99By Allan Fox: #3 WBA Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) is hoping to pull off a huge upset on July 26th when he challenges WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) for his WBA title at Madison Square Garden. Geale, 33, was kind of knocked down a peg last year when he was beaten by Darren Barker by a 12 round split decision. Geale lost his WBA title in that fight, and it was a fight that many fans had thought he was going to win. But Barker proved to be too strong for Geale in that fight.

“I’m pleased to be making my way back to HBO against Gennady Golovkin, a fighter who everyone thinks is invincible,” said Geale. “A victory will get me back to where I want to be. The people of Australia believe in me and that’s what drives me, my countrymen. I want to show them they have a great champion. On July 26th the world will see me back on top.”

Daniel Geale to face Gennady Golovkin on 7/26 at MSG

golovkin44By Allan Fox: A fight between WBA middleweight Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) and former IBF/WBA 160lb. champion Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) has been given the green light for July 26th, according to AAP. The World Boxing Association granted Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler’s request to let Golovkin bypass an WBA ordered title defense against #2 WBA Jarrod Fletcher in order to take a bigger and far more interesting fight against Geale.

The Golovkin-Geale fight will be televised by HBO. It’s possible that the co-feature will see heavyweights Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez facing each other in a battle of unbeaten heavyweights. The fight card is probably going to need a lot more than this for it to have a chance of selling out the garden because the Australian Geale doesn’t have a fan base in the New York area, and Golovkin still isn’t a huge ticket seller either.

Golovkin to fight on July 26th, possibly against Geale

golovkin22By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) will be fighting on July 26th at Madison Square Garden in New York against an opponent still to be determined. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions is going to make a request to the World Boxing Association to get permission for Golovkin to bypass #2 WBA Jarrod Fletcher, who the WBA recently ordered Golovkin to fight next, for him to get a more interesting fight against former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale 30-2, 16 KO’s) on July 26th.

“GGG says he will fight twice more this year. Wants to continue to stay active #boxing,” said Steve Kim. “Loeffler says they have filed a special request to the WBA for GGG to face Danny Geale next. GGG to fight on July 26th at MSG according to Tom Loeffler.”

Golovkin vs. Geale in the works

golovkin43By Scott Gilfoid: With the previously scheduled fight between former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale and Matthew Macklin now dead in the water, a fight between Geale and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) is reportedly in the works. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions had been in negotiations with Top Rank for a fight against super middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but the negotiations have gone nowhere and Golovkin and his team are moving on.

Geale is moving on as well rather than looking to reschedule a fight against Macklin. Their fight was supposed to take place on the Bryant Jennings vs. Mike Perez heavyweight clash on May 25th, but the card was cancelled following a shoulder injury that Perez suffered while training for the Jennings fight.

Golovkin waiting to see whether Geale will fight him or give up his WBA strap

Image: Golovkin waiting to see whether Geale will fight him or give up his WBA strapBy Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Association has already ordered a fight between WBA Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale (28-1, 15 KO’s) and the WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) for a bout that has to take place before the end of the year or Geale will be stripped of his title.

Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez sees Geale just letting the WBA stripping him of the title, and then focusing on defending his IBF middleweight title against his mandatory challenger 38-year-old Sam Soliman in what should be a much easier fight for Geale compared to facing the hard hitting Golovkin.
