Berto, Chavez Jr., Margarito and Pacquiao possible opponents for Cotto – News

Image: Berto, Chavez Jr., Margarito and Pacquiao possible opponents for Cotto – NewsBy Jason Kim: You can add World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KOs) in the mix of potential opponents for new WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) to fight next. In an article at Primera Hora, Berto’s promoter, Lou Dibella, had this to say about a potential match between Berto and Cotto: “We love the idea. Berto would be willing to rise to 154 pounds to challenge Cotto. I understand that would be a sensational fight for the styles of both fighters. We must wait until all the chips fall into place. Finally, if Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. , face each other, this increases our chances of achieving a fight with Cotto. I had a conversation with [Bob] Arum and he was honest in telling me I had to be patient.”

Does Cotto deserve a rematch with Pacquiao?

By Jason Kim: Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) is hoping to get a rematch with Manny Pacquiao if his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t take place. Cotto, 29, defeated Yuri Foreman on June 5th to capture the world Boxing Association junior middleweight title. This was certainly a good comeback fight for Cotto, because he had been taken apart by Pacquiao in a 12th round knockout loss in November of last year.

Steward thinks a Cotto-Pacquiao rematch would be very different now – News

Image: Steward thinks a Cotto-Pacquiao rematch would be very different now – NewsBy Jim Dower: Emanuel Steward, the new trainer for WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s), thinks a rematch between Cotto and WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao would be very different compared to their previous fight in November 2009. In that bout, Cotto was hopelessly out of his class, as Pacquiao totally dominated him, dropping Cotto twice and causing the Puerto Rican fighter to have to run just to survive.

Steward says he wants Cotto to fight Pacquiao, and not Margarito – News

Image: Steward says he wants Cotto to fight Pacquiao, and not Margarito – NewsBy Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto’s trainer Emanuel Steward says he would prefer not to reward Antonio Margarito with a rematch after Margarito was found to have a plaster-like substance on his hand wraps before his fight with Shane Mosley last year in January. Steward, who recently started training Cotto, says he would prefer that Cotto go after a rematch with Manny Pacquiao rather than face Margarito again and he would also like to see Cotto fight at welterweight instead of fighting against the bigger fighters at junior middleweight.

Hoping Cotto loses to Foreman so we don’t have to see Cotto-Pacquiao II

Image: Hoping Cotto loses to Foreman so we don’t have to see Cotto-Pacquiao IIBy Chris Williams: If former WBO middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) beats World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) this Saturday night, it’s likely that the 29-year-old Cotto will be used as a substitute for Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he and Manny Pacquiao are unable to put a fight together for some reason. Cotto is a fine fighter, and had an excellent career, but I certainly don’t want to see him in a rematch with Pacquiao, not after seeing how badly Cotto was dominated in their fight last year.

Calzaghe comments on Haye-Valuev, Cotto-Pacquiao and Mayweather

cal4524545444By Scott Gilfoid: Former World Boxing Organization super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe had a few thoughts on the dull bout between WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev and British heavyweight David Haye, saying in the Southwalesargus “I don’t think you can really blame Haye [for the boring fight] for that. Valuev is absolutely awful, a poor fighter and a very poor champion.” I agree that Valuev was a horrible champion, because that’s pretty much already been established. However, I don’t agree on giving Haye a free pass on why their fight ended up to be so boring. Haye threw only a small number of punches per round, little over 10, which is pretty pathetic for a top heavyweight contender.

Cotto-Pacquiao: Can anybody separate these two?

pac-cotto5By Sohaib Malik: One day from fight night and the jury’s still out on the victor of ‘Firepower’ – when Manny Pacquiao meets Miguel Cotto. The Ring Magazine asked 10 top boxing trainers for their opinions and almost unsurprisingly, Cotto and Pacquiao were both tipped 5 a piece. What’s more interesting is that only 3 tipped the fight to go the full 12 rounds.

Cotto-Pacquiao: Five More days

pac34343By Manuel Perez: I’m really looking forward to Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KO’s) facing a real welterweight in WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto on November 14th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Look at the photo. Pacquiao is already starting to look kind of sad. Pacquiao has risen the hype train for the past six months since defeating a limited Ricky Hatton.

The Future of boxing?

cotto452323By Kwame Cinquez: I place a scenario in front of you, quite a ridiculous one I’m sure you would agree. Imagine Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal (No1 + 2 in the WTP Rankings) refusing to face an opponent in a ranked tournament, instead playing a more lucrative exhibition match against an opponent of clearly inferior quality (but far more popular tennis player). This may indeed seem preposterous, but this is indeed the state of contemporary boxing.
