Canelo vs. Golovkin

By The Commissioner: The date is May 1st 2015, the stage is set for the most anticipated fight of all time. The ‘fight of the century’, the fight of all fights, the fight that has dominated sports media for near on a decade. Floyd Mayweather Jr, Pretty Boy Floyd, Money Mayweather finally squares off against the people’s champion; Manny Pacquiao, the Filipino Whirlwind, whom to many observers, is Floyd’s kryptonite.

Fast forward to May 3rd 2015 and social media is awash with negative opinion regarding the supposed ‘Fight of the Century’, many labeling it boring and devoid of any real engagement. The bout came to a predictable ending, at least to the unbiased eye, one uninfluenced by matters of the heart and solely based on logical thinking. Personally, I had always believed that Mayweather was too skilled a boxer to be beaten, or even troubled by Manny but I still tuned in, more to see if Pac-Man could be prove me wrong rather than to see Mayweather prove me right.

(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Dan Ambrose: What remains to be seen later this year is whether the World Boxing Council will force their WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to face his #1 WBC challenger Gennady Golovkin at the full weight of 160lbs for their fight?

Golovkin, his promoter Tom Loeffler, and trainer Abel Sanchez, have all said that they will not give in and agree to fight Canelo at a catch-weight of 155lbs. They insist that the fight must take place at 160lbs. Normally, a world champion can only insist that their challengers agree to a catch-weight when it’s a voluntary defense and not a mandatory.

(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Al Classico: A few weeks into 2016 and the talk is heating up about a potential clash between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez taking place sometime towards the end of the year, most likely around September or so. Hopefully the public demand for this fight will ensure that it happens sooner rather than later and we get to see this mega fight within the year, rather than within the next 5 years as was the case with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Manny Pacquiao showdown.

With Canelo being the paper champion at middleweight but having never fought at the full 160 weight limit, the time has come for him  to start answering some real questions; whether he is the real deal or simply a pretender to the throne. He does have legitimate talent with some fantastic skills and has shown a willingness to fight anyone, however, this has recently been overshadowed by the abuse of his star power in ensuring that circumstances and decisions always go his way.

(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Dan Ambrose: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman believes that the unification fight between Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will go ahead between September and November this year without any snags that could potentially hold it up and keep it from taking place.

Sulaiman isn’t ready to pick a favorite in the fight right now, as he believes it’s a true 50-50 fight. This might be a surprise to some boxing fans, because many believe that Sulaiman likes the 25-year-old Canelo a great deal and wouldn’t like to see him get brutally knocked out by the older Golovkin in this fight. Canelo means a lot to Mexican boxing and it would be a huge blow if he were to suffer a bad KO loss to Golovkin in this fight.

By Listen: Gennady Golovkin has taken the boxing world by storm over the past couple years. Many fans and pundits alike rank GGG very high and often #1 in their pound for pound rankings. It isn’t hard to see what the hype is about.

Golovkin has accumulated 31 knockouts in 34 bouts, which equates to a knockout percentage of over 90. Comparatively Manny Pacquiao’s knockout percentage is only 84%, which of course is nothing to sneeze at, but lower than Golovkin’s higher percentage.

It is a matter of time before these two warriors face each other insde the ring. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar de la Hoya has chosen to let the fight marinate a little longer before it takes place in late 2016. The decision makes a lot of economical sense, as business people their job is to make the most money out of their fighters; this is how you do it.

Gennady Golovkin an excellent fighter with great skills and power has shocked the boxing world and has made his name known and spoken of by many followers and fans of boxing. “GGG” is an exciting fighter that moves very well inside the ring, he closes the gaps between him and his opponent and goes in for the kill.
