Can Canelo beat Golovkin?

1-canelo-cotto-results (17)By Yannis Mihanos: In many of his past fights, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) appears to have had a weight advantage over his opponents. Often times, Canelo has looked like the bigger and stronger guy over his smaller opposition.

Canelo dishes punishment with his power punches and demoralizes fighters appearing unfazed from their attacks and punches. His last victim was WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, looked in front of him half the size of the 25-year-old Canelo.

Golovkin’s trainer: Canelo won’t last 9 rounds with GGG

golovkin5554By Dan Ambrose: Earlier this week, the World Boxing Council ruled that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) can take a voluntary defense before facing his #1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in the second half of 2016 as part of a mandatory defense.

The delay in the title defense by Canelo is driven in part by the desire to let his fight against Golovkin marinate so that it can be bigger than it would be if it were to take place next. Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez understands why Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions want the Canelo-Golovkin fight to marinate.

Roach: Golovkin beats Canelo if the fight happens

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach believes that Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) will beat WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) if the fight takes place in the future. Roach thinks that Golovkin could be the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport today, but he just can’t prove it because there are so few fighters that want to face him right now.

Roach thinks that Golovkin’s promoters at K2 Promotions wasted a lot of time with his career by choosing to keep in Germany fighting for many years after he turned pro. It wasn’t until 2010 that Golovkin started fighting in the U.S off and on.

Golovkin’s rep says Canelo fight will take place late 2016

golovkin5554(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Dan Ambrose: Unless we see WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) pulling the nuclear option of vacating his title, we’ll be seeing a big mega-fight between him and interim WBC middleweight champ Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in the second half of 2016. This has been confirmed by a representative from Golovkin’s team. Vacating his WBC title won’t hurt Canelo, because he has a ton of casual boxing fans that wouldn’t be too bothered by him giving up the belt. They just want to see him fight and win. Any title that Canelo might have is secondary and less important.

They met with the World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman last Monday and he got an agreement from the two fighter’s promoters Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions and Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions that the fighters would both take voluntary fights in the first quarter of next year before facing each other in late 2016, likely in September.

WBC’s extension for Canelo expires on Monday

canelo5666By Dan Ambrose: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman’s extension for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) expires this Monday for him to come to a deal with #1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) for a fight between them. The WBC gave Canelo an extension last Saturday, but it remains to be seen whether the fight will be negotiated by Monday.

It’s starting to look like Canelo made the mistake of fighting WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto for his title, because with the title came the huge responsibility of having to defend the belt against Golovkin in the first defense.

WBC extends Canelo-Golovkin negotiations until Monday

1-cotto-canelo-results (8)By Dan Ambrose: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says he’s extending the negotiations between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and #1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) until Monday. It’s unknown what Sulaiman will do when Monday comes around and there’s still no deal for a fight between them.

Going by what Sulaiman has been doing recently, he’ll likely give Canelo another extension for the negotiations rather than playing hardball by ordering a purse bid or threatening to strip him of his WBC title.

Sanchez: Canelo vs. GGG @ 155 is an insult to all great warriors that fought at 160

1-CottoCaneloArrivals_Hoganphotos8By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Abel Sanchez thinks WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s interest in fighting Gennady GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) at a catch-weight of 155lbs is a very disrespectful to the sport of boxing. Sanchez also thinks it is disrespectful to all the great warriors that have fought in the past in the normal weight classes without catch-weight handicaps to try to get an unfair edge against their opponents.

Sanchez feels that Canelo and Miguel Cotto is a couple of divas who have tried to put themselves ahead of the sport of boxing by gaming the system by using catch-weight handicaps to gain an edge over their opponents.

WBC extends Canelo-Golovkin negotiations until December 11th

1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos1By Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman says they’ll be extending the negotiations between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and mandatory WBC challenger Gennady Golovkin until December 11th.

Suliaman is using the Thanksgiving day holiday as an excuse for why the Canelo-Golovkin negotiations couldn’t be moved in a timely fashion. It’s a pretty flimsy excuse though because they should have known about the holiday already.

WBC president to speak with Golovkin and Canelo’s management on conference call

1-canelo-cotto (9)By Dan Ambrose: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman will be holding a conference call with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions and Gennady Golovkin’s promoters at K2 Promotions on Friday to discuss a fight between Canelo and Golovkin. Sulaiman gave Canelo 15 days previously to start negotiations with Canelo otherwise he would strip him of his title, but he’s not playing it strict with him for some reason.

Sulaiman is talking about letting Canelo get in a voluntary defense of his WBC middleweight title next May, and then a possible fight between him and Golovkin taking place next year in September. Canelo would be fighting on both of the Mexican holidays in 2016.

Golovkin should give Canelo the 155lb catch-weight he wants

1-CANELO ALVAREZ 05By Tim Fletcher: It’s becoming increasingly clear that for interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) to get the fight that he wants against the current WBC 160lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-0-1, 32 KOs), he’s going to need to agree to the 155lb catch-weight that Canelo wants for the fight to happen.

Whether he likes or not, Golovkin needs to agree to the catch-weight if he really wants the fight against the young champion. I don’t think it’s asking a whole lot that Golovkin agree to give Canelo this small handicap.
