1-canelo-cotto (9)By Francisco Gurrola: The thought and imagination of a potential clash between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will come to closure soon. It is a matter of time before these two warriors face each other insde the ring. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar de la Hoya has chosen to let the fight marinate a little longer before it takes place in late 2016. The decision makes a lot of economical sense, as business people their job is to make the most money out of their fighters; this is how you do it.

Gennady Golovkin an excellent fighter with great skills and power has shocked the boxing world and has made his name known and spoken of by many followers and fans of boxing. “GGG” is an exciting fighter that moves very well inside the ring, he closes the gaps between him and his opponent and goes in for the kill. He makes great use of his jab and goes very well to the body with hooks, often compared to Julio Cesar Chavez’s Sr. popular left hook.

“Canelo” Alvarez a young strong fighter that has slowly been gaining the public’s approval with his performances and recent wins brings a lot to the table for an exciting match against “GGG”. “Canelo” is known to go very well to the body with powerful shots and great combinations, he does not posses the greatest movement inside the ring and lacks the ability to close gaps between his opponents. “Canelo” has improved his defense by using more head and hip movement to slip off some shots and has done it effectively so far.

The edge that I and former professional boxers like Juan Manuel Marquez and Floyd Mayweather Sr. give is to “Canelo” Alvarez. The previously stated names have given their thoughts and opinons on the much anticipated match. Juan Manuel Marquez agrees that “Canelo” has the potential to win the fight against “GGG”, he gives “Canelo” the edge because of his speed, defense, and counter-punching skills (even though he believes there is still room for improvement). He stated that you don’t see many fighters in the middleweight division being able to slip off punches and counter punch effectively the way “Canelo” did against Miguel Angel Cotto.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. seems to agree that “Canelo” has the power and hand speed to take on “GGG” and walk away with a win.

I personally give the edge to “Canelo” because not only will he be bigger in size when they meet in the ring, but “Canelo” I think will be able to land effectively on “GGG” and be able to slip off the majority of shots “GGG” will throw at him. “Canelo”, as bizarre as it may sound is the younger and more experienced fighter of them both, he has earned his way up there despite the criticism that other writers and bloggers give him, they tend to take away from “Canelo” what he has earned, criticize his catch-weight demands, his weight gains, stamina, ring movement etc etc… always looking for excuses.

The fact is that Canelo is a world champion that is not afraid of fighting anybody., if he can still drain down to 155lbs great for him, no rules are being broken, if he can’t then he will fight at 160 end of discussion. On my previous article I stated the reasons why Canelo had the edge over Cotto and how in my opinion he would win the match, today is no exception I give Canelo the edge over GGG and give my most humble prediction that Canelo will win the bout by a 12-round unanimous decision.
