Burns: I could fight Broner later on in the year

burns45222By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) is still floating WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s name as a potential future opponent despite having turned down the fight three times in the past. Broner has been trying to get a fight with Burns for close to two years, but with no luck. Tired of wasting his time trying to get a fight against a reluctant Burns, Broner is moving up to welterweight to face WBA champion Paulie Malignaggi on June 22nd.

Burns said to Sky Sports “There’s still talk about this fight [Broner vs. Burns] fight happening. When I was speaking to Eddie he said his team has actually been in touch to see about it. Eddie’s said my next fight is definitely in Glasgow, but it’s [fight against Broner] a possibility for later on in the year.”

Hearn doubts Burns vs. Broner fight will ever happen

broner556By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Gavin Rees, doubts that the management for WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will agree to fight a unification bout with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s), if Burns gets past IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16th in London. While Hearns thinks Burns would take the fight with Broner, he has doubts whether Burns’ people will let Burns face Broner because of how difficult a fight it would be for Burns.

Hearn thinks Burns’ people will simply price him out of the fight by asking for too much money rather than flat out saying no to the fight. Hearn just sees Broner as too good for any lightweight in the division.

Warren wants Burns vs. Broner

burns35By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ promoter Frank Warren says he’d like to make a fight between Burns and the American talent WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner if Burns can get past his next fight against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16th. That’s going to be a tough fight, and I can see Vazquez winning that one and ruining Warren’s plans for a Burns-Broner fight.

Warren said in his column frankwarrentv.com “Ricky prevails in his pending tough unification bout against Mexico’s IBF box Miguel Vasquez at Wembley Arena on 16th March, I’ll be uprooting trees to broker a GB-USA super fight to determine top dog at 135lbs before the year is through and I’ll be backing Ricky, no ‘Problem.”

Warren: Ricky Burns WILL fight Adrien Broner

burns2By Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Frank Warren says that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will fight the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in 2013, if Burns can get past his scheduled March 16th unification bout against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, in London, United Kingdom.

Warren said in his column at thesun.co.uk “He [Burns] intends to beat Broner, not simply turn up for the dough. That fight WILL happen, home or abroad, provided both continue to win…Burns has done a job on world class opposition in Michael Katsidis, Paulus Moses and Kevin Mitchell.”

Morrison: Ricky Burns isn’t ready for Adrien Broner

burns43By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I knew it would happen. WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) won’t be fighting WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) anytime soon, if ever. Burns’ promoter Alex Morrison says that Burns isn’t ready to take on a fighter like the talented 23-year-old Broner at this point.

Speaking with the Heraldscotland.com, Morrison said “We are not taking the fight. Ricky doesn’t have the necessary strong mindset at the moment to undertake such a big fight.”

Burns wants a tune-up bout before facing Broner

burns334By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will be fighting a tune-up bout in January to get ready for a possible fight against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in April, if Broner is still interested in facing Burns.

That’s a big if because Broner isn’t just going to stay in one place and waste his career away fighting in the lightweight division, which boxing fans have very little interest in. Broner will be moving up, so if Burns doesn’t take the fight then he’ll lose out on the good payday he was going to receive.

Schaefer still hoping Burns will agree to fight Broner on February 16th

broner6By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer still hasn’t given up on the idea of trying to get WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) to agree to fight Golden Boy fighter WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner 25-0, 21 KO’s) on February 16th in the United States.

Schaefer is willing to pay Burns a lot more money than he usually gets for his fights if he’ll agree to fight the talented Broner. As of now, Burns’ manager Alex Morrison is looking to have Burns fight on January 26th in Glasgow, Scotland rather than taking on the dangerous Broner. However, it could be that they’re waiting to see if they get the offer that they from Golden Boy for this fight.

Broner’s dad: We know Ricky Burns is going to vacate rather than fight Adrien

Image: Broner’s dad: We know Ricky Burns is going to vacate rather than fight AdrienBy Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner’s dad thinks that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will choose to vacate his title rather than face WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) and get beat. Broner’s dad thinks Burns ran from Broner last year when Broner was on the verge of fighting Burns for his WBO super featherweight title.

Burns vacated the strap and then moved up in weight to the lightweight division, and picked up the WBO lightweight strap outside of the ring.

Broner’s dad said to thaboxingvoice.com “Now we’re coming for him [Burns] at 135. We know he’s going to give up the belt and not fight us, so we’re prepared for that.”

Broner vs. Burns: Ricky wins this one

Image: Broner vs. Burns: Ricky wins this oneBy Stevie Ocallaghan: A lot of talk is made of the fact that World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight champion Ricky Burns moved up in weight. Some think he ran from Adrien Broner. The actual fact is as you get older, you fill out and it was draining all physical reserves he had to try keep to the 9st 4 limit.

After the 4 round demolition of Kevin Mitchell, you could see Burns was far bigger and stronger, so why would you drain yourself to stay at an unnatural weight just to suit others when it’s not what’s best for you.

Will Ricky Burns duck Adrien Broner?

Image: Will Ricky Burns duck Adrien Broner?By Scott Gilfoid: We recently saw what appeared to be WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns putting it on his promoter/management as to whether he’ll be stepping in the ring with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner in a unification bout in 2013.

I for one never thought that Burns would fight Broner in the first place given that Burns had a chance to fight him last year and instead moved up in weight to lightweight. So, I wasn’t at all surprised when Burns told Steve Bunce that it’s up to his promoter whether he fights Broner.
