De La Hoya: If Deontay gets hit by Luis Ortiz, he’s not getting up

1-OrtizVidondo_Hoganphotos2By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya thinks that his fighter WBA interim heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz (23-0, 20 KOs) would flatten the talented WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs) with a shot and that he wouldn’t be able to get up from the punch when/if the two large heavyweights fight in the future. And get this get; De La Hoya believes that Wilder would never even agree to fight the Cuban Ortiz in the future, as he’s someone that Wilder would choose to steer his career around.

Right now, the 6’4” Ortiz, who De La Hoya says is 33 rather than his listed age of 36, is traveling in a different path with Wilder. Ortiz is the interim WBA champion and is looking to get a title shot against either Wladimir Klitschko or Ruslan Chagaev.

Wilder and Ortiz can only fight now if Ortiz is able to beat Chagaev or Wladimir to pick up one or more of the world titles. Until then, there’s no point in Wilder facing the aging Ortiz, who looks to me to be a lot older than his listed age of 36.

Luis Ortiz vs. Bryant Jennings on December 19th on HBO

1-OrtizVidondo_Hoganphotos1By Dan Ambrose: WBA interim heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz (23-0, 20 KOs) will be facing former world title challenger 31-year-old Bryant Jennings (19-1, 10 KOs) on December 19th on HBO Championship Boxing at the Turning Stone in Verona, New York. The Ortiz-Jennings will be on the Nicholas Walters vs. Jason Sosa card.

Jennings hasn’t fought since April of this year in losing to IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko by a 12 round unanimous decision. The fight wasn’t competitive, but Jennings did a good job of avoiding the 6’6” Wladimir’s big right hand and left hooks.

Deontay Wilder vs. Bryant Jennings not happening, says Shaw

wladimir53562By Scott Gilfoid: You can remove #5 WBC, #6 WBA, #9 IBF Bryant Jennings as one of the potential contenders for WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s next fight in January. Jennings’ promoter Gary Shaw says that Jennings, 31, isn’t in the running for Wilder’s next fight, according to Dan Rafael.

Wilder will be making his defense against someone else besides Jennings. That doesn’t mean that he’ll be getting a lower level guys. It’s possible he could take on someone better than Jennings. We’re going to have to wait and see what his adviser Al Haymon comes up with for him to fight.

Deontay Wilder: Klitschko looked old against Jennings

deontay73By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) says he was surprised at how old IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) looked recently in him having to struggle to defeat the light hitting American Bryant Jennings (19-1, 10 KOs) last month in their fight on April 25th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Wladimir won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision, but he definitely looked old and fought like an older guy that couldn’t pull the trigger on his shots anymore.

Klitschko vs. Jennings peaks at 1,742M viewers on HBO, making it #1 most watched HBO fight since 2012

wladimir200By Scott Gilfoid: In a real surprise, last Saturday night’s fight between IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) and American Bryant Jennings (19-1, 10 KOs) brought in huge ratings for HBO Championship Boxing at Madison Square Garden in New York. The fight drew a peak of 1,742,000 viewers with a peak of 1,637,000 viewers, according to the Nielson ratings, making it the top boxing fight for 2015.

In fact, the fight is the biggest one on HBO since 2012. Granted, it was on regular HBO and not pay-per-view, but it’s still a big deal that a fight between Wladimir and Jennings was able to bring in those type of numbers. Wladimir hadn’t fought in the United States in seven years since his fight against Sultan Ibraginov in 2008.

Klitschko: Losing a Trainer or Losing the Heart?

wladimir0843By Rusty Nate: Last weekend, we watched a lackluster performance from the long reigning heavyweight champion of the world Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) with him beating Bryant Jennings (19-1, 10 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision. It’s not completely clear the reason behind the poor performance.

It could be that Wladimir has travelled so little in the recent years that making the trip over to the US for this flight simply didn’t agree with him. It could also be that the long career of the now 39 year old champion is finally starting to catch up with him.

Jennings: I feel like I won the fight against Klitschko

jennings52By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBA, #4 IBF, #4 WBO heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings (19-1, 10 KOs) feels he should have won the fight last Saturday night against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) in their fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Jennings, despite his opinion that he won the fight, came up on the losing end of the judges’ scorecards with him losing by the scores of 116-111, 116-111 and 118-109.
