Broner vs. Rees

By Chris McHugh: Every boxing fan is now beginning to hear the name of Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner – and with good reason. The young pretender to Floyd Mayweather’s pound-for-pound throne has shown he has the potential to go all the way to the top with an impressive start to his short, but already successful, career.

The rising star also exudes an air of cockiness outside of the ring, and a certain swagger inside the ring, that has all the trademarks of his self-confessed idol ‘Money’ Mayweather.

And just like the world’s No.1 boxer, he seems to be able to back up his words in the ring, capturing world titles at two different weights as well as winning 21 of his 25 bouts by knockout – including an 8-round destruction job on Antonio DeMarco to capture the WBC world lightweight belt in his last fight.

By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for former WBA light welterweight champion Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s), believes Rees has a real chance to pull off an upset a little over a week from now when he steps it up a couple levels to fight WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) on HBO at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hearn said something interesting earlier today when asked about the fight. Hearn says he thinks Rees would beat every fighter that Broner has ever beaten in his career. In other words, Hearn thinks Rees would beat Daniel Ponce De Leon, Antonio DeMarco, Vicente Escobedo, Jason Litzau and Eloy Perez.

By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) will be looking to take WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s title on February 16th. Rees has seen something in Broner’s style that leads him to believe that he’s going to be able to beat him in this fight, and walk out of the Boardwalk Hall with his World Boxing Council strap on February 16th.

Rees said to RingTV “I’m fully confident in a victory. I’m a massive underdog on the odds but we don’t see it like that. I’m coming over here to win.”

Well, I sure hope Rees raises his game from the one I saw from him in his two fights against Derry Matthews in the last two years because the Rees that I saw in that fight wouldn’t beat Broner’s recent victims Antonio DeMarco, Vincente Escobedo or Jason Litzau.

By Scott Gilfoid: With a week and a half to go before the Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) vs. Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) fight on HBO on February 16th, Rees seems to be working out big time for this to fight to try and pull off a big upset.

It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen, but he sure seems to think he’s going to win judging by some of his recent comments. For a fighter that is a HUGE underdog, Rees has been sounding a tad cocky, like it’s a sure thing he gets his hand raised at the end of the fight.

By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) doesn’t think WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) sees him as a real threat to beating him on February 16th in their fight at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Rees feels that Broner sees their fight as just another easy win for him to pick up against an over-matched opponent.

Rees said to RingTV “He [Broner] shows no respect for nobody…He’s underestimating me and in [2] weeks’ time he’ll know what it’s like in the ring.”

I guess that also can also apply to Rees. In two weeks’ time he’ll know what it’s like to be in the ring with Broner, and I suspect he’s going to be miserable after he finds out. When you have a mismatch like the Broner-Rees fight, the best that the over-matched opponent [Rees] can really hope for is that he doesn’t look too awful in getting blasted out.

By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBA, #5 WBO Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) isn’t pleased to learn that he’s a monstrous underdog going into his February 16th fight this month against unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Rees was expecting the odds to be a lot closer, but he was reportedly shocked to hear that he’s an underdog by as much as 80-1 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Rees told thesun.co.uk “I understand Broner being a firm favorite, but I can’t believe my ability is being treated with such contempt. To regard me as an 80-1 chance is simply absurd. Do they think I’m some wet behind the ears novice?”

By Scott Gilfoid: A month from now this will all seem like a bad dream for Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) after he faces WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in the United States on February 16th, and takes his knockout loss, and then flies back to his home city of Newbridge, Wales, in the UK.

Honestly, it’s not going to end good for Rees. But right now Rees is still hopeful, and still believes he has a chance to pull off a huge upset when they meet at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Reality will set in quickly once February 16th arrives, and Rees takes a one-sided beat down from the most talented fighter by far in the lightweight division.

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA light welterweight champion Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) thinks WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) is a Floyd Mayweather Jr. clone and he doesn’t think he’s nearly as good as Mayweather Jr. Rees feels he’s going to beat Broner next month on February 16th and show this to the boxing world.

Rees told Sky Sports “He’s [Broner] a Mayweather wanna be. We’ll see if he’s the real deal on February 16th. I don’t think he is.”

Broner isn’t really like Mayweather at all other than his habit of fighting flat-footed and using the shoulder roll defense that Mayweather is famous for. Beyond that, Broner and Mayweather are completely different fighters. Broner doesn’t have Mayweather’s hand speed, he can’t move like Mayweather did in his youth, and he’s much more of a puncher than Mayweather.

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) has chosen to take an easy stay busy fight while he waits to see if the British fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns will finally agree to face him after two years of chasing him.

Broner will be fighting Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) on February 16th in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This fight is seen by all to be a terrible mismatch and boxing fans aren’t really excited about this fight for obvious reasons, but Broner has to do his part in defending his World Boxing Council lightweight strap every so often while he waits for the more important fights to open up.

The Burns fight might ever happen because he’s fighting IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16th and there’s a really good chance that Burns will lose that fight, and once he loses then there’s no point of Broner in continuing to try and get a fight with him.
