Hearn: Gavin Rees would beat everyone that Broner has beaten

rees34By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for former WBA light welterweight champion Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s), believes Rees has a real chance to pull off an upset a little over a week from now when he steps it up a couple levels to fight WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) on HBO at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hearn said something interesting earlier today when asked about the fight. Hearn says he thinks Rees would beat every fighter that Broner has ever beaten in his career. In other words, Hearn thinks Rees would beat Daniel Ponce De Leon, Antonio DeMarco, Vicente Escobedo, Jason Litzau and Eloy Perez.

Okay, I can understand Hearn having belief in his fighter, but isn’t that going a little overboard with his praise? I mean, come on. Rees would be wiped out totally by each one of those guys, and you could see it just by watching a few minutes of Rees’ fights. The guy is going life and death with domestic fighter Derry Mathews, and here Hearn is talking about Rees being able to beat all the guys Broner has ever fought.

Hearn said to I Film London “Gavin Rees is a former European champion, he’s a very accomplished fighter, and there hasn’t been a fighter that Broner has beaten that I wouldn’t expect Rees. So he’s a huge outsider, a big underdog, but he’s a great little fighter; he’s as tough as an old boot, and he fancies the job. [At this point in the interview Hearn started smiling in weird way with a gleam in his eyes]. Imagine a little upset, how sweet would that be, eh? To make Rees a 20,30, 40 to 1 underdog is outrageous. Again, we know he’s a huge underdog, but before he was offered the purse, he accepted. This is a huge opportunity, a life changing…If it doesn’t work out for Gavin, he’s going to give Broner a hell of a fight and HBO’s going to love him, and he’ll fight for another world title.”

I think Hearn has lost it. Like I said, I understand his devotion to his fighter and all that, but you’ve got to look at the Broner-Rees fight from a realistic view. Rees is going to get drilled on February 16th, and it’s not going to be pretty. I think it’s safe to say that Rees is not going to win, he’s not going to look good, he’s not going to be fighting for another world title, and HBO is not going to give him another shot by televising one of his future fights.
