Broner-Rees: Hopefully Gavin’s trainer stops the fight when it becomes too one-sided

rees45By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) has chosen to take an easy stay busy fight while he waits to see if the British fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns will finally agree to face him after two years of chasing him.

Broner will be fighting Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) on February 16th in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This fight is seen by all to be a terrible mismatch and boxing fans aren’t really excited about this fight for obvious reasons, but Broner has to do his part in defending his World Boxing Council lightweight strap every so often while he waits for the more important fights to open up.

The Burns fight might ever happen because he’s fighting IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16th and there’s a really good chance that Burns will lose that fight, and once he loses then there’s no point of Broner in continuing to try and get a fight with him.

I just hope that Ree’s trainer does the right thing on February 16th by stepping in and halting the fight when Broner starts battering Rees too badly. I think Rees is one of those guys that’ll refuse to go down, and just stand there and take silly shots to the head. We don’t need to see that kind of thing because it’ll be too brutal. Rees wants to continue his career after this fight, and he doesn’t need to be a punching bag for Broner for 12 full rounds.

That’s why I’m hoping Rees’ trainer is thinking about Rees’ own welfare when he sees that he has no chance of winning the fight by say the 2nd round. I think by that point it’ll be painfully obvious that Rees doesn’t stand a chance of winning the fight and is just taking some god awful punishment out there against Broner.

Rees looked badly hurt against a very average Anthony Mezaache last year in March. Although Rees won the fight by a 7th round knockout, he took a lot of punishment and looked to be staggered at one point. His nose was bleeding badly for many rounds in that fight, and he looked bad.
