Referee explains why he stopped Broner-Theophane fight

Image: Referee explains why he stopped Broner-Theophane fightBy Dan Ambrose: Last Friday night, referee Luis Pabon stopped the Adrien Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) vs. Ashley “Treasure” Theophane (39-7-1, 11 KOs) in the 9th round moments after Broner had nailed Theophane with a left to the groin area in their fight at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

When Theophane tried to motion to referee Luis Pabon that he’d been hit low, Pabon did a very controversial thing in choosing to stop the fight rather than stopping the action to warn Broner for a low blow or give Theophane a moment to recover from the low blow.

Broner moving to 147, says he’ll beat Mayweather

1-LR_FIGHT NIGHT-BRONER vs THEOPHANE-04012016-8225By Allan Fox: After defeating #9 WBA Ashley Theophane (39-7-1, 11 KOs) by a 9th round knockout last Friday night in a surprisingly competitive fight on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV, Adrien “The Problem” Broner (32-2, 23 KOs) says he’ll be moving up to the welterweight division to campaign at 147.

Broner failed to make weight last Thursday at the weigh-in, and it’s clear at this point in his career that he needs to move up. Broner says that he’ll talk with his adviser Al Haymon to see what his next fight will be. Broner is ready to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., and he says he’ll take his unbeaten record away from him if that fight gets made.

Broner defeats Theophane, calls out Mayweather

http://youtu.be/ZeOieTXV938

By Allan Fox: In less than an impressive performance, former WBA 140lb champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) was able to use a low blow to hurt Ashley Theophane (39-7-1, 11 KOs) and get a 9th round stoppage on Friday night when the referee blew a call by stopping the fight at the DC Armory in Washington, DC. The Broner-Theophane was televised by Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV.

The vacant WBA Super light welterweight title was up for grabs for the fight. This was Broner’s belt that he lost on Thursday when he failed to make weight. With Theophane getting stopped, the WBA title will now likely be fought over by Ricky Burns in his fight against Michele Di Rocco on May 21. It’s hard to picture the winner of that contest being a Super WBA champion.

Broner stops Theophane – results

Image: Broner stops Theophane - results(Photo credit: Nabeel Ahmad/Premier Boxing Champions) By Jim Dower: It wasn’t easy but Adrien “The Problem” Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) was able to stop #9 WBA Ashley “Treasure” Theophane (39-7-1, 11 KOs) in the 9th round in a highly competitive fight on Friday night at the D.C Armory in Washington, DC. Broner was outworked by the busier Theophane in many of the rounds, and it appeared that the the British fighter was starting to take over the fight after the 6th. However, Broner caught Theophane with a scorching right uppercut in the 9th.

Broner then moved in and landed a low blow that further hurt Theophane. At that point, the referee Luis Pabon stopped the fight after thinking that Theophane was signaling that he wanted the fight stopped. Theophane was letting the referee know that he’d been hit low. It’s unknown how the referee missed the low blow because it was visible to all. The fight was stopped at 1:10 of the 9th.

Will Broner’s problems continue against Theophane?

Image: Will Broner’s problems continue against Theophane?By John Thompson: Adrien “The Problem” Broner faces a myriad of legal issues and has been stripped of his WBA light welterweight title after failing to make weight yesterday, so will he face any more drama tonight against Ashley “Treasure” Theophane at the DC Armory in Washington, DC? With Broner, anything is possible, but this April Fools Day’s main event on Premier Boxing Champions (televised on SpikeTV) seems unlikely to produce any major upsets.

At 26 years old, Broner (31-2, 23 KOs) is nine years younger than Theophane (39-6-1, 11 KO’s). Having boxed 180 rounds to Theophane’s 306, Broner should also be the fresher fighter. That being said, Broner has faced stiffer competition with bouts against the likes of Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter, Paulie Malignaggi, and Daniel Ponce De Leon.

Broner a huge favorite to beat Theophane tonight

Image: Broner a huge favorite to beat Theophane tonightBy Jeff Aranow: Adrien “The Problem” Broner (31-2, 23 KOs) lost his WBA Super light welterweight title on Thursday of this week without even putting up a fight when he failed to make the 140lb weight limit for his defense against fringe contender Ashley Theophane (39-6-1, 11 KOs) for Friday night at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

Broner weighed in at 140.4lbs at the weigh-in. Instead of trying to take off the 0.4 pounds by using the two hours that was given to him to melt the weight off, Broner opted to not to be reweighed. It’s possible that Broner attempted to take the weight off in the backroom and couldn’t lose it all. Instead of coming back out to show the boxing fans that he couldn’t take the weight off, he instead didn’t bother being reweighed.

That’s good money for Theophane, who hasn’t made the huge money during his career.
