Donaire likely won’t be nearly as successful as Pacquiao

Image: Donaire likely won't be nearly as successful as PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: In their haste to find the next Manny Pacquiao, many boxing fans have already crowned WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) as the next Pacquiao based on a few wins during his career against Fernando Montiel, Vic Darchinyan and Wladimir Sidorenko. Some boxing fans even think that the slender 5’7″ Donaire will be good enough to capture eight or more world titles before he retires in the future. I think that’s pretty laughable because the 28-year-old Donaire is way behind the pace that Pacquiao set while capturing titles.

Fernando Vargas’ comeback fight on hold due to illness

Image: Fernando Vargas' comeback fight on hold due to illnessBy Dan Ambrose: The long awaited comeback of former IBF/WBA junior middleweight champion Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KO’s) will have to wait a little longer, as the 33-year-old Vargas is ill with a case of bronchitis and pneumonia and won’t be able to make his April 16th fight date against super middleweight Henry Buchanan. It might be for the best, though, because Vargas might have been asking for a beating in that fight by taking on a quality fighter like that at such a high weight.

Paul Williams to return to action on 4/30, as a welterweight

Image: Paul Williams to return to action on 4/30, as a welterweightBy Dan Ambrose: Former two-time WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KO’s) will be returning to the ring on April 30th for his first fight after being viciously knocked out in the 2nd round in a failed attempt to capture the WBC middleweight crown against champion Sergio Martinez on November 20th, 2010. In hindsight, it was perhaps the wrong move for the skinny 6’3″ Williams to attempt to fight Martinez for a second time after struggling badly and beating him by a controversial 12 round decision in their first fight in December 2009.

Overall the Heavyweight Division based on Body Fat

By Mark Hepplestall: I recently seen an article that suggested putting a body fat limit on the heavyweight division due to the amount of boxers that are visibly overweight, and this is a follow on from that particular article. The idea of a body fat cut off is a great idea and has been starring the world in the face. Firstly this cannot be seen as discrimination as its more protecting the overweight, and evidently unprepared boxers from being hurt.

The One True Champion

Image: The One True ChampionBy Shaun Campbell: Boxing is in a state where politics and governing bodies are controlling which fights are being made and more importantly, which fights aren’t. With all the associations and there belts, its left fans wondering who the one true champion in the division is. Recently, Amir Khan was promoted to “WBA Super World Light-welterweight Champion”. It’s a shambles. This means that Marcos Maidana and Eric Morales will be contesting for the WBA light-welterweight world title in their upcoming fight. Then we have the various intercontinental/international/ titles for each governing body. The WBO have these intercontinental titles, along with interim championship.
