The holiday Inn Hotel in Birmingham decided to round off a year of chills and spills by showcasing the rising stars of Midlands boxing as well as some seasoned veterans. Fans braved the biting weather on Thursday the 19th December to watch these gladiators go to war.

The action kicked off with Light Heavyweight Jody Meikle clashing with new to the game Lennox Clarke who, despite his single victory as a professional took Miekle the distance in 4 rounds. Clarke matched Miekle’s bold style with pure boxing skill.

Put Garcia vs. Matthysee in proper perspective

garcia3By Ken Woods: The fight between Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysee is one of the most talked about matches this year. It has garnered strong emotions in both boxers’ favor. My question is, why?

Many believe Matthysee will destroy Garcia because of his recent performances, but let’s look at both fighters’ abilities and past bouts from a fair perspective.

Both of these boxers faced Zab Judah. Garcia and Matthysee both knocked him down and could not finish the job. However, Garcia had Judah hurt a few times in the bout while Matthysee lost a close controversial decision. Judah also gave a better performance against Garcia. Matthysee did not get robbed. The notion amongst boxing fans that one fighter gets robbed if the fight is close is getting out of hand.

The importance of character in boxing

malig2By Johnny Jobbler Character is the springboard for success in boxing. Every great boxer down the years has had great character and charisma. From Sugar Ray Robinson to Floyd Mayweather, Muhammad Ali to Roy Jones Jr all have had bundles of charisma to match their abundant pool of talent.

Even the average boxers with charisma seem to do well for themselves. Paulie Malignaggi is a great example. Although being a cut below top class, Malignaggi has consistently found himself launched into big fight after big fight. Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto are all household names who have shared a ring with “the magician”.
