Badou Jack needs opponent, Chavez Jr. injured

Badou JackBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack’s title defense against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. won’t be happening anytime soon, as Chavez Jr. is reportedly dealing with a shoulder injury that is keeping him from facing Jack. The Badou vs. Chavez Jr. fight will supposed to have taken place in April, but that’s not going to happen now.

Badou will be looking to see if his promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. can find him a backup plan for his voluntary defense. There are a lot of good options for Badou to fight. Chavez Jr. was obviously a known commodity with the boxing fans who remember him for when he was a factor in the middleweight division.

Chavez Jr. says Badou Jack fight is close to being done

chavez9999By Dan Ambrose: 30-year-old former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32 Kos) says he’s close to announcing his next fight against WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack (20-1-1, 12 KOs) within the next few days. Chavez Jr. will be facing Badou in April sometime.

Chavez Jr. is coming off of a 10 round decision over Marcos Reyes in his last fight in July of 2015. Chavez Jr. has lost two out of his last five fights, and arguably doesn’t deserve to be fighting for a world title right now. Chavez Jr. was stopped in the 9th round by Andrzej Fonfara last year in April. His only wins in the last three years have come against journeyman Brian Vera and Marcos Reyes.

Chavez Jr. is training with Robert Garcia in getting ready for the Badou fight. Chavez Jr. has taken off a lot of weight since he started getting ready for the fight, and he’s likely to be in good shape by the time he faces Badou in April.

Garcia wants Chavez Jr. to lose weight at Big Bear, California before finishing up the training in Riverside, California. Garcia figures that Chavez Jr. can take off a lot of weight in the next three to four weeks, and they would still have a month and a half to get ready for the Badou fight.

Groves: Badou Jack is No.1 on my list

Badou Jack vs George GrovesBy Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBC super middleweight contender George Groves (22-3, 17 KOs) defeated Andrea Di Luisa (18-4, 14 KOs) last Saturday night by a 5th round knockout at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. Groves, 27, says he wants to go after a rematch with WBC 168lb champion Badou Jack (20-1-1, 12 KOs) to avenge his 12 round split decision loss to him from last September in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Groves lost that fight by the scores of 115-112, 116-111 for Badou, and 114-113 for Groves. I personally thought the 116-111 was the more accurate score of the three for that fight.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. wants WBC 168lb title in 2016

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs Marco ReyesBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32 KOs) will be looking to return to the ring in 2016 to try to capture the WBC super middleweight title belonging to champion Badou Jack. Chavez Jr, 29, has been out of action with a left hand injury since his win over middleweight Marcos Reyes five months ago in July in a fight Chavez Jr won by a 10 round unanimous decision.

That fight took place at a catch-weight of 170lbs. That was Chavez Jr’s third fight at light heavyweight in his last four fights since moving out of the middleweight division in 2013. Chavez Jr is technically a super middleweight, but he’s only fought in that weight class once in the last two years in a fight against Brian Vera in March 2014.

Badou Jack interested in DeGale unification fight in 2016

badou8By Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack (20-1-1, 12 KOs) says he’s interested in facing 29-year-old IBF 168lb title holder James DeGale (22-1, 14 KOs) in a unification fight in 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Badou recently took the scalp of DeGale’s fellow compatriot George Groves last September in winning a 12 round split decision in his first defense of his WBC 168lb title.

Badou wants to fight DeGale and former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. However, the fight with Chavez Jr will need to wait for him to get through his injury problems, because he is still not ready to fight, says Badou. As such, Badou is willing to fight DeGale as soon as possible.

In the meantime, Badou plans to fight in February of 2016, as soon as he finds out whom his promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. has for him.

Hearn wants Callum Smith to face Badou Jack or Groves next

hearn54By Scott Gilfoid: If Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn gets his way, #1 WBC Callum Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) will be facing either WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack (20-1-1, 12 KOs) in his next fight or former three time world title challenger loser George Groves (21-3, 16 KOs). However, without the World Boxing Council’s assistance, Smith will likely need to wait until 2016 or even possibly 2017 before he faces the likes of Badou.

I can’t see Groves volunteering to fight a contender. I can see him volunteering to fight a world champion, but definitely not a mere contender who doesn’t have a huge following as of yet. But Smith would lose to Groves and Badou badly in my view. I’m just saying. Don’t come crying to me when Callum Smith gets royally whipped by those guys.

DeGale wants Badou Jack or Martin Murray next after Bute

degale785By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale (21-1, 14 KOs) still hasn’t faced Lucian Bute (32-2, 25 KOs) yet, but he already has his next fight planned out in his mind if he can get past the 35-year-old Bute on November 28th at the Centre Videotron, in Quebec City, Quebec.

In a predictable move, DeGale wants to fight either Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs) or WBC super middleweight champ Badou Jack. Of course, Murray will have to do his part by defeating WBO 168lb champion Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) in their fight on November 21st at the Tui Arena, in Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany.
