Alekseev steps it up against Yoan Pablo Hernandez

alekseev33By Allan Fox: #1 IBF Alexander Alekseev (24-2-1, 20 KO’s) has a really tough task ahead of him on November 23rd in facing IBF cruiserweight champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (27-1, 13 KO’s) at the Stechert Arena, Bamberg, Bayern, Germany. Alekseev, 32, has had problems each time he’s stepped it up in class in fights against Firat Arslan, Denis Lebedev, and Victor Emilio Ramirez.

The southpaw Alekseev has problems when facing guys with power, and he’s failed on two of the occasions he’s been in with a puncher. Alekseev probably should have been given a loss in his fight against Arslan last year in May instead of 12 round draw. Alekseev appeared to win only 2 of the rounds, but he was given a controversial draw out of that fight.

Yoan Pablo Hernandez – Eric Fields on 2/2 in Germany

Steve Herelius, Yoan Pablo HernandezBy Eric Thomas: IBF cruiserweight champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (27-1, 13 KO’s) will be taking an easy title defense on February 2nd against #12 WBA, #15 IBF, Eric Fields (21-1, 15 KO’s) at the Max Schmeling Halle, Prenzlauer Berg, in Berlin, Germany.

Hernandez, 28, has had some tough fights recently in two bouts against Steve Cunningham and his victory against Troy Ross. Somehow Hernandez was able to squeak through those three bouts to get to his first easy fight since his victory over Steve Herelius last year in February.

Fields, 30, kind of disappeared after getting beaten by Ola Afolabi in April 2008. Fields had come into that fight off of the back of an impressive 1st round knockout win over Kelvin David back in January 2008. A lot of boxing were impressed with Fields at that point in his career and many thought he’d beat Afolabi. But Fields had problems with Afolabi’s power and he ended up getting taken out in the 10th round by him.

Cunningham: I don’t consider Hernandez a champion

Image: Cunningham: I don't consider Hernandez a championBy Jim Dower: Former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham (24-3, 12 KO’s) will be looking to recapture his International Boxing Federation title against champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (25-1, 13 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Fraport Arena, in Frankfurt, Germany.

Cunningham, 35, lost his title to 27-year-old Cuban Hernandez last October in a 6th round technical decision victory. The ending was kind of controversial, as Hernandez suffered a cut between the eyes from a head clash but the ringside doctor pulled the plug on the fight in a real hurry rather than letting it continue to see if Hernandez’s trainer could stop the bleeding.
