Image: Darchinyan's manager says the WBC will order a Darchinyan-Mares rematchBy Jim Dower: Elias Nassar, the manager for Vic Darchinyan (35-3-1, 27 KO’s), says the World Boxing Council will order a rematch between Darchinyan and undefeated Mexican Abner Mares (21-0-1, 13 KO’s) due to Darchinyan losing a controversial 12 round split decision to Mares in December in Showtime’s four-fighter bantamweight tournament. Darchinyan and his manager filed a protest after the defeat, feeling that they should have won the fight.

Vic Darchinyan will be facing Abner Mares, and Joseph Agbeko will take on Yonnhy Perez in what promises to be action packed bouts. The problem is that the two best bantamweights – Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire – won’t be taking part in the tournament, and that really hurts the tourney.

Image: Marquez knocks out Vazquez, could face Darchinyan nextPhoto credit – Carlos Baeza – By Jason Kim: Former IBF bantamweight champion Rafael Marquez (39-5, 25 KO’s) was too much for Israel Vazquez (44-5, 32 KO’s) tonight, taking him out in the 3rd round of a scheduled 12 round non-title bout at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. With Vazquez cut over both eyes in the 3rd, Marquez knocked him down with a powerful looping right hand that put Vazquez on one knee. After he got up, Marquez was all over him, backing him up to the ropes and unloading on until the referee stepped in and stopped the bout at 1:33 of the round. Vazquez was cut badly over his left eye in the 2nd round.

Image: Darchinyan defeats Guerrero, fails to impressBy Jim Dower: After beating number #12 ranked WBA and #15 ranked WBC super flyweight contender Rodrigo Guerrero (13-2-1, 9 KO’s) by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night at the Agua Caliente Casino, in Rancho Mirage, California, Darchinyan said that he thinks that Nonito Donaire is scared of him. Donaire, for those who don’t remember, easily defeated Darchinyan by a 5th round stoppage three years ago in July 2007. Donaire has been interested in facing Darchinyan since then, but hasn’t had much luck in getting him back in the ring again.

In round 1 both men came out testing their opponent, Darchinyan landed a double jab and backs Guerrero against the ropes. Guerrero lets his hands go but most get blocked; Darchinyan throws a flurry of punches at the end of the round

Bradley defeats Peterson; Darchinyan stops Rojas – Boxing results

bradley3345By William Mackay: Unbeaten World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KO’s) defeated number #1 challenger Lamont Peterson (27-1, 13 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Agua Caliente Casino, Rancho Mirage, California. The final judges’ scores were 118-110, 119-108 and 120-107. Bradley, 27, knocked Peterson down with a hard right hand to the top of Peterson’s head in the 3rd round, and had him hurt in several of the other rounds of the one-sided fight. It was thought going into the fight that this would be a fairly closely contested affair. However, Bradley was much too fast and better on the inside.

Round 1 started out with both men feeling each other out, mid way through the round Agbeko landed a solid right hand that rocked Darchinyan.

agbeko342By Jim Dower: International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko (27-1, 22 KO’s) defeated challenger Vic Darchinyan tonight by a 12-round unanimous decision tonight at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. The final judges’ scores were 116-111, 114-113 and 114-113. Darchinyan, 33, who was moving up from the super flyweight division, seemed to bite off a little more than he could chew by moving up in weight to take on Agbeko.

Darchinyan Looks to Capture Bantamweight Title

By Sam Gregory: This Saturday night, July 11th, Vic Darchinyan is looking to capture the IBF bantamweight title from Joseph Agbeko when the two clash at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida to be televised live on Showtime.

Darchinyan, who has been sparring with featherweight champion Chris John while he’s been training in the United States for this fight, has fought over 170 amateur fights including competing for Armenia in the 2004 Olympics. The Raging Bull has a professional record of 32-1 with 26 KO’s and has fought top level opposition over the last six years from the flyweight to super flyweight divisions.
