Sergio Frias KOs Vic Darchinyan

1-Vic Darchinyan vs Sergio Frias - July 16_ 2016_Fight_Ryan Hafey _ Premier Boxing Champions (1)

By Dan Ambrose: Giving away an incredible 10 inches in reach and three inches in height, 40-year-old former two-division world champion Vic Darchinyan (42-9-1, 31 KOs) suffered a 2nd round knockout last Saturday night against Mexican journeyman sub Sergio Frias (18-6-2, 9 KOs) on the undercard of the Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola card at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

The 5’8” Frias flattened the 5’5” Darchinyan in the 2nd with a right hand to the head. The shot sent Darchinyan down on his back on the canvas. The referee Keith Hughes almost immediately stopped the fight when he saw how hurt Darchinynan was. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:14 of the round.

Breazeale, Guerrero, Cuellar win on afternoon PBC card

YouTube video

By Michael Montero:, photos by Tiffany Lam – Saturday afternoon just south of Los Angeles, Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions returned to the StubHub Center with an afternoon card. Three bouts, headlined by Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero taking on Aaron Martinez, aired live on NBC. And although the crowd at the venue was sparse, the action in the ring delivered.

In the TV opener, undefeated heavyweights squared off as Dominic Breazeale of nearby Glendale took on Yasmany Consuegra, of Cuba.

Guerrero defeats Martinez; Cuellar stops Darchinyan

guerrero6788(Photo Credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: In one of former two division world champion Robert Guerrero’s worst performances of his career, he had to get up off the deck in the 4th round to come back and defeat 2nd tier fighter Aaron Martinez (19-4-1, 4 KOs) by a narrow 10 round split decision on Saturday afternoon on NBC on Premier Boxing Champions at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The final judges’ scores were 97-92 and 95-94 for Guerrero, and 95-94 for Martinez. The 97-92 score made no sense at all because you can make an argument that Guerrero really should have lost the fight. I had Martinez winning 5 rounds, and with the knockdown in the 4th, he should have won the fight.

Vic Darchinyan vs. Juan Jimenez this Saturday, on February 7th in Mexico

darchinyan4534By Allan Fox: 39-year-old former two division world champion Vic Darchinyan (39-7-1, 28 KOs) will be fighting this Saturday night on February 7th against 23-year-old Mexican fighter Juan Jimenez (19-8, 12 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Domo del Palacio Municipal, Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

There’s little question that Darchinyan will beat up and stop Jimenez in their fight this Saturday. Darchinyan is well above Jimenez in the talent department. This is just a record-padding fight for Darchinyan and not meant to be a competitive one.

Darchinyan hoping for third fight against Donaire if he beats Nicholas Walters

darchinyan4334By Chris Williams: Vic Darchinyan (39-6-1, 28 KO’s) would like nothing better than to upset Top Rank’s plans on matching Nonito Donaire up against WBA featherweight champion Nicholas Walters (23-0, 19 KO’s) by beating Walters in their fight this Saturday night at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. Darchinyan says Donaire likely won’t agree to fight him now due to the problems that he gave him in their second fight last November.

Darchinyan cracked Donaire’s cheekbone with one of his big left hand shots in the fight. But Darchinyan believes that he can force Donaire to fight him by beating Walters and then beating IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich to unify the division. At that point Donaire won’t have much choice but to fight him again, and Darchinyan says he’s stronger now because he’s put on more size since he fought Donaire.

Vic Darchinyan vs. Nicholas Walters on May 31st in Macao, China

darchinyan4By Chris Williams: Former two division world champion Vic Darchinyan (39-6-1, 28 KO’s) will be fighting his second consecutive fight in the 126lb division when he faces WBA World featherweight champion Nicholas Walters (23-0, 19 KO’s) at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. Walters is the guy that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had wanted to match against Nonito Donaire, but he changed his mind for some reason after Donaire had his faced fractured in his last fight against Darchinyan last November. Donaire won the fight by a 9th round TKO, but he suffered a hairline fracture in his face in that fight.

Darchinyan did such a good job in that fight that they decided to let him fight on HBO again in the featherweight division, even though he’s someone who hasn’t been a really effective fighter since he left the super flyweight division years ago. Darchinyan was nearly unbeatable at flyweight and super flyweight, but there was no money in those divisions, so he kept moving up in weight to chase the bigger fights.

The week in Boxing

andrade565By Rachel Aylett: Last Saturday’s Top Rank show at the American Bank Center in Texas was excellent. It featured three championship fights and a long-gestating 10-round rematch. Three of the victors on the night either were, are, or will be elite fighters.

The star of the show and one of the stars of the sport at the moment was Mikey Garcia. He made his debut at super-featherweight and won his second alphabet title (WBO) by knocking out experienced Puerto Rican Roman Gonzalez. Garcia is not just an alphabet belt holder though, he is a true champion. He is already clearly the no.1 fighter in his new division, as he was clearly the no.1 fighter in the featherweight division and he will shortly go on to be clearly the no.1 fighter in the lightweight division. A champion then, in every sense of the word.

Nonito leaves more doubts than answers with win over Darchinyan

donaire22By Gerardo Granados: Last Saturday night at Corpus Christi, Texas, U.S.A.; Former champion Nonito Donaire failed to impress against the Armenian Raging Bull Vic Darchinyan, who once again fell short of victory when got over confident and undermined Nonito´s big left.

Entering the ninth round I had it scored 78 – 74 for Vic, Darchinyan kept a tight guard countering Donaire with hard shots thru round one to the eight with Nonito´s face showing clear signs of damage. But, in the ninth round Donaire landed his big left that lead to Darchinyan demise; Vic picked up the count visibly hurt only to take more punishment until the referee stopped the bout.

Donaire: I want Rigondeaux next

donaire4By Chris Williams: Following his less than impressive 9th round TKO win last night over a non-prime version of 37-year-old Vic Darchinyan (39-6-1, 28 KO’s), Nonito Donaire (32-2, 21 KO’s) said to HBO analyst Max Kellerman that he wants to face WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 KO’s) to try and avenge his defeat to him earlier this year in April. However, but let’s be real here, Donaire didn’t look good against Darchinyan, and appeared very vulnerable. This is the type of guy that Rigondeaux will beat again, and likely very easily.

Donaire said this to Kellerman after the fight:

“I’m going with your boy [Rigondeaux], how about that?”

Mikey defeats Martinez; Donaire stops Darchinyan; Andrade decisions Martirosyan

donaire2By Chris Williams: Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KO’s) had to get up off the deck in the 2nd round to come back to stop WBO super featherweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez (27-2-2, 16 KO’s) with a left to the body in the 8th round to capture his WBO title on Saturday night at the American Bank Center, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Garcia was knocked down by a right hand to the head in the 2nd round. But from 3rd round on, Garcia dominated the action with his hard shot. Martinez might have had a better chance to win the fight if he had a little bit of power and if he had left his hands go. Garcia did look vulnerable when he was getting hit, but Martinez didn’t have the power or the work rate to win.
