The Rise of the Heavyweights

By Christopher J Knowles: As we all know, if you’re a casual boxing fan or fanatic boxing fan we all have noticed the Heavyweight Division just doesn’t seem to have that same spark as many past generations, will we ever see the heavyweight division light up the boxing scene again? I think we will!

Over the years heavyweight boxing just hasn’t been up to standard or has it? The Klitschko’s have dominated the division. I mean really got it in their back pocket and many fight fans are pointing at them for the decline in the division.

Fury: I’m too risky for Wladimir Klitschko

By Scott Gilfoid: #8 WBC Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) thinks IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (61-3, 51 KO’s) is running scared of fighting him at this point in his career. Fury believes that Wladimir will fight Alex Leapai, Kubrat Pulev and then take a mess of voluntary defenses before getting out of the sport without fighting the 6’9” Fury.

Tyson Fury displays underrated boxing skills (and a belly)

fury6262By Bradley Dee: This past Saturday in a fight the U.S. fans probably watched via streaming, undefeated heavyweight contender Tyson Fury defeated Joey Abell by TKO via fourth round stoppage. Tyson dropped Abell multiple times en route to the stoppage, and even took a few heavy shots himself, making for a decent scrap. Tyson displayed his very quick jab and heavy follow-up shots, and one thing that impressed me was the speed to which he was delivering those jabs. He made a point to get that jab in Abell’s face constantly.

Tyson, also known for his out of ring antics, once again put on a show both in and out of the ring. During the fight, he made a point to showboat, talk, retaliate on cheap shots, almost anything he could do to entertain the crowd.

Tyson Fury to fight in April, expects to be thinner

fury684By Scott Gilfoid: The 274 lb heavyweight Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) looked in dreadful shape last Saturday night in struggling to defeat 3rd tier fighter Joey Abell (29-8, 28 KO’s) by a 4th round TKO in London, UK. Fury, who looked like he had climbed off a couch to take the fight, was hit frequently with clean left hands by Abell in the 4 rounds of action.

On at least two occasions, Abell appeared to shake Fury up and have him reeling. To his credit, Fury was able to knock Abell down 4 times en route to stopping him in the 4th, but not before fouling him several times. It was a good thing that Fury had a lenient referee working the fight because a lot of referees would have disqualified him after he hit Abell twice while he was on the canvas in the final knockdown in the 4th round.

Fury confesses that he hit Abell low on purpose

fury755By Scott Gilfoid: In a sad confession by heavyweight Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) last night, he admitted that he intentionally hit journeyman Joey Abell (29-8, 28 KO’s) low last night in the 3rd round of their fight at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. For the most part, Fury had been dominating the powerful but over-matched 32-year-old Abell. However, in the 3rd round, Fury nailed Abell with a punch South of the border while the referee was attempting to break them.

Fury said he hit him low in retaliation for Abell’s head-butt that took place earlier in the fight. That’s a sad excuse from Fury for him hitting the man low because Abell didn’t appear to intentionally head-butt Fury. In looking at replays last night, it appeared that Abell’s forward momentum caused his head to ram into Fury’s head when he went after him after buzzing him with a hard shot.

Hughie Fury outshines Tyson in stopping Matthew Greer in 2nd round

hughie5By Scott Gilfoid: It’s hard to believe it but 19-year-old heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (14-0, 9 KO’s) looked better than his overweight cousin Tyson Fury last night in crushing 36-year-old Matthew Greer (16-12, 13 KO’s) in the 2nd round of a scheduled 6 round fight at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. While the 274 lb Tyson Fury had to struggle to defeat Joey Abell last night, Hughie made it look easy in getting Greer out of there quickly without taking a lot of heat shots for his troubles.

Fury knocked Greer down three times in the 2nd round to get the stoppage. Greer’s corner threw the white towel in the center of the ring after the third knockdown. The first two knockdowns by Hughie were by body shots, and the last one was from a right to the head.

Tyson “too fast” Fury- The hard facts…

fury5667By Donal McKenna: After watching Tyson Fury V Joey Abell on Saturday, I felt it was time that the Manchester man got a good write up.

Tyson is one of the most entertaining heavyweights at present-Fact. At a time when the welterweight is bringing all the Boxing entertainment, Tyson is bringing something different. When he fights there is trash talk, bold statements, show-boating in the ring, ring chat during fights, entertaining post match chat and all the calling out you could ask for.

Fury defeats Abell, but looks horrible

fury664(Tyson Fury seen here hitting Joey Abell the first of two times while he was down on the canvas in the 4th round) By Scott Gilfoid: A fat looking Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) stopped Joey Abell (29-8, 28 KO’s) in the 4th round on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. Fury, fighting in a dirty manner, knocked Abell down four times in the fight. He dropped Abell down twice in the 3rd and two more times in the 4th round.

Fury got away twice with hitting Abell while he was on the canvas. I can understand the referee messing up and letting Fury get away with hitting Abell once while he was down, but twice? That was so, so sad. I thought Fury should have been disqualified after he hit Abell for the second time after he was down.

Don’t be surprised if Abell knocks Fury clean out tonight

fury88888By Scott Gilfoid: The lanky and now overweight heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) will be facing the hard hitting southpaw slugger Joey Abell (29-7, 28 KO’s) tonight in what could be a very interested fight while it lasts at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. Fury has been sitting around for the past 10 months resting on his laurels from his wins over pretty much exclusively 2nd and 3rd tier fodder, and he’s not stayed busy like normal fighters do.

Fury doesn’t have much of a chin, and I think this could very well go badly for him if Abell goes after him the way he’s done against other heavyweights with weak chins. Tonight he’s going to be tasting some left hand bombs from Abell, and I hope for Fury’s sake that his chin has improved over the last 10 month with all the time off he’s had from the sport.

Fury weighs in at 274, it’s probably a trick

fury5444By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) weighed in at a career high 274 lbs at today’s weigh-in for his clash against replacement opponent Joey Abell (28-7, 28 KO’s) on Saturday. This is 20 lbs heavier than Fury was for his last fight against little Steve Cunningham last April. However, if you look at what Fury was wearing when he weighed in – a bulky sweatshirt, shoes, pants, hat, and likely his wallet and keys – the reality is he’s probably the 254 he was for his last fight.

It just looks like Fury is trying to play mind games with the 32-year-old Abell. Why Fury would want to play mind games with a fighter who has been knocked out in 3 out of his last 5 fights is beyond me. If that’s what Fury needs to do in order to try and get an edge against a 3rd tier opponent than more power to him.

Personally, I think it shows a weakness of mind to try and psyche out a guy that is already dramatically over-matched to begin with, but I think it shows that there’s some fear in Fury’s mind about the power that Abell will be bringing to this fight on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena, in London, UK.
