The Rise of the Heavyweights

By Christopher J Knowles: As we all know, if you’re a casual boxing fan or fanatic boxing fan we all have noticed the Heavyweight Division just doesn’t seem to have that same spark as many past generations, will we ever see the heavyweight division light up the boxing scene again? I think we will!

Over the years heavyweight boxing just hasn’t been up to standard or has it? The Klitschko’s have dominated the division. I mean really got it in their back pocket and many fight fans are pointing at them for the decline in the division. Is this correct? I would say no. The heavyweight division has lost its sparkle because it’s lost its home. For years America was the home of the giants of the ring, even if the fighter wasn’t American the belts would be consistently defended on American turf, You only have to look back as far as the last truly unified heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, The British/Canadian defended his world honours a staggering 14 times in America and not all them defences was against American opposition, but it kept the division in the main light of the boxing world, Now because the titles are now mainly defended in and around Europe the division isn’t in the American spotlight. The media hub of the world. For years Heavyweight champions would be on chat shows, radio stations, TV commercials and even advertisement boards across America which would then been seen across many countries, promoting the fighter and the division. BUT IS THIS NOW ABOUT TO CHANGE!

With Vitali Klitschko being stripped of with WBC title are we now going to see the Heavyweight Division rise from the Ashes?, with Chris Arreloa and Bermane Stiverne going head to head for the vacant title in a yet to be confirmed location, then we have Malik Scott and Deontay Wilder in a final eliminator for the title. Is there a buzz starting to surround the division? If there is not I’m guessing very soon we will be seeing an Heavyweight Champion defending the title in America and with exciting fighter from the UK, Derek Chisora, Tyson Fury and David Price all keen to cross the pond and pounce on the next WBC champion I do really believe the division will have some light shown upon it again.

With active fighters from the UK dying to fight in the US, and with current heavyweights that consistently fight in the US fighting for a Heavyweight title I believe that we are at the beginning of some great, the beginning of the Rise of the Heavyweight Division. No offence to the Klitschko brothers, they are receiving 10-15 Million per fight in Europe so there is no need from them to travel the US to defend the titles every other bout, but the inactivity of the heavyweight titles in and around America I believe is why we’ve seen this dramatic decline in the division.

So when and if the titles are defended in and around America are we going to see same buzz of past generations? We are yet to learn, but I can tell you something, it is about to heat up.
