Tony Thompson: Fury would be an easier fight than David Price

thompson3By Scott Gilfoid: #8 IBF, #15 WBC heavyweight contender Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (39-4, 26 KO’s) doesn’t think too much of UK fighter Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) after watching some of his fights, and he sees the 6’9” British heavyweight as an easier mark than David Price, who Thompson twice destroyed in 2013 in quick knockouts. Thompson doesn’t see much talent from Fury, and he thinks he’s vulnerable to pretty much any heavyweight they put him in with due to his lack of ability.

Fury has a fight coming up in four months against Derek Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s) in a WBO heavyweight eliminator bout at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, UK. However, after that fight, should Fury win, he’s going to have a lot of time in between then and the time he gets an eventual world title shot against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, because the Ukrainian champion has another WBO mandatory challenger in Kubrat Pulev who he has to fight later this year. As such, Fury will be sitting around for a long, long time waiting for his title shot against Wladimir.

Tony Thompson beats Odlanier Solis by split decision

thompson2By Allan Fox: 42-year-old Tony Thompson (38-4, 16 KO’s) beat a lazy-looking Odlanier Solis (20-2, 13 KO’s) by a 12 round split decision on Saturday night to capture the vacant WBC International heavyweight title at the Tekirdag, Turkey. The final judges scores were 115-114, 115-113 for Thompson. The final judges had it 116-112 for Solis. Thompson appeared to win 11 of the 12 rounds in my scoring of the fight. The only round that Solis fought well enough to win was the 2nd. All the rest of the rounds he was badly outworked by the older and much bigger Thompson.

Thompson, 6’5″, had too much size for the smaller 6’1″ Solis in this fight, and most of the rounds saw Solis being jabbed constantly in the face. Thompson wasn’t putting much power in his shots, but he was throwing nonstop punches that Solis had no answer for. Occasionally, Solis would throw a few shots, but mostly he just stood and covered up. Solis had the better power, but he would frequently miss with his shots when trying to nail Thompson.

Tony Thompson – Odlanier Solis ready for fight on Saturday

Thompson_SolisBy Allan fox: Cuban heavyweight Odlanier Solis (20-1, 13 KO’s) weighed in on Friday for his fight tomorrow night against two-time title challenger Tony Thompson (38-4, 6 KO’s) in Istanbul, Turkey. Solid weighed in at 257 lbs, which is a fairly slim weight for him. He’s been as high as 271 during his career, which is around 40 lbs too much for him given his short 6’1″ height. Solis was perfect as an amateur in weighing 200 lbs in 2004 before coming over to the U.S and quickly piling on a lot of weight.

Thompson weighed in at 266.5 lbs. That’s around the same weight he’s been at since his two fights with David Price. Thompson is a lot better in the mid-240s compared to him in the 260s. He seems to have good power in the 260s, but his stamina isn’t as good.

Tony Thompson vs. Odlanier Solis this Saturday, March 22nd

TeamThompson(Photo credit: Team Thompson) By Allan Fox: #5 IBF, #10 WBC heavyweight contender Odlanier Solis (20-1, 13 KO’s) will be taking on two-time world title challenger #1 IBF, 42-year-old Tony Thompson (38-4, 26 KO’s) this Saturday, March 22nd in Istanbul, Turkey. The two fighters will be battling it out for the vacant WBC International heavyweight title. But the fight is a lot more important than the little known title that will be on the line. The winner of the fight will keep in the hunt for a world title shot against one of the heavyweight champions, while the loser will likely see his career skittering downward in the top 15 rankings.

If Solis, 33, comes into shape for this fight then he should be able to come out on top and win a decision based on his hand speed, power advantage and his youth. However, he’s someone that tends to come into his fights in the mid-250s, and that’s a lot of weight to be putting on a small 6’1” heavyweight.

Deontay Wilder’s options for next fight more limited now

deontay891By Scott Gilfoid: With WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko poised to make an announcement about his next title defense in the next week or two, #3 WBC heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) now sees his chances for a fight against Bermane Stiverne for the vacant WBC title as nonexistent now.

That’s the fight that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was hoping to put together in the 1st quarter of 2014 once Vitali vacated his belt or had it stripped from him by the World Boxing Council. But with Vitali showing up at the WBC’s 51st convention in Bangkok, Thailand, he’s made it clear that he intends on keeping his WBC title for a little while longer.

Deontay willing to fight Tony Thompson if Stiverne fight doesn’t happen

deontay755By Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBC Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) is hoping that his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions can line up a fight for the vacant WBC heavyweight title against #1 WBC Bermane Stiverne (23-1-1, 20 KO’s) once WBC heavyweight title holder Vitali Klitschko vacates his title or is stripped of his belt by the WBC for failing to defend it in over a year.

If Vitali decides to keep defending the belt, then Deontay says he wants to fight former heavyweight title challenger Tony Thompson (38-4, 26 KO’s) to keep busy while he waits for his eventual shot against the WBC title.

Tony Thompson wants Deontay Wilder fight

thompson32By Scott Gilfoid: Former heavyweight title challenger Tony Thompson (38-4, 26 KO’s) is saying that he’s interested in fighting undefeated contender Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s), but he’s unable to the match because Deontay’s manager supposedly isn’t agreeable to a Thompson-Wilder fight for some reason.

Thompson said “Wilder may be saying ‘yes,’ but his manager is saying, ‘Hell no!’ Tyson Fury, Alexander Povetkin, Tomasz Adamek, it don’t matter. I’m here.”

This is interesting because Deontay has said many times in the past that he’d love to fight the 6’5″ Thompson, but he would never agree to it. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer also said in the past that he was interested in matching Deontay vs. Thompson. However, Thompson himself said after his first win over David Price that he wasn’t looking for a fight against Deontay. Instead, Thompson wanted to get another world title shot against one of the Klitschko brothers.

Deontay wants Chisora, Tony Thompson and Bryant Jennings

wilder55By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) says he wants to take on the best contenders while en route to a heavyweight title shot in 2014. After Deontay takes care of his light work next month against Nicolai Firtha (21-10-1, 8 KO’s) on October 26th in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Deontay wanted to face a big name for his next bout, but he was unable to get any of the top fighters to agree to fight him on only 3 weeks’ notice.

Deontay wasn’t mentioned for the October 26th card until just recently, and that didn’t allow Golden Boy Promotions enough time to find a really big name for him.
