By John F. McKenna (McJack): Prior to the match with Patterson, Liston made the famous quote:
“In the films the good guy always wins, but this is one bad guy who ain’t gonna lose.”
By John F. McKenna (McJack): On September 3, 1957 Liston’s life seemed to briefly stabilize when he married Geraldine Clark, but even Geraldine could not keep “Sonny” out of trouble for long. After another altercation with a police officer Liston was again arrested.
By John F. McKenna (McJack): There is some uncertainty as to when Charles “Sonny” Liston was born. Liston himself was not sure of his birth date, but it is believed that it was between the years of 1929 and 1932. Sonny was the 24th of 25 children born to an abusive and alcoholic father in St. Francis County, Arkansas. As was the custom in the south in those days Liston grew up working in the cotton fields with his siblings.
