Porter vs. Spence could happen in future, says Kenny P

Image: Porter vs. Spence could happen in future, says Kenny P

By Allan Fox: Kenny Porter, the trainer/father of former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs), says a fight between him and unbeaten #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (21-0, 18 KOs) is a fight that he’s interested in for the future when Spence becomes more of a name. Kenny is more interested right now in matching Porter against WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman in a rematch or the likes of WBC 147lb champion Danny Garcia. Those are fights that he’d like to make in the near future for Porter.

Thurman is expected to defend his WBA title against his mandatory challenger next David Avanesyan. Garcia could face Andre Berto next and then possibly Thurman in 2017. Porter could be back in October for his next fight, according to Kenny.

The 10 best welterweights ranked

Image: The 10 best welterweights ranked

By Dan Ambrose: There’s a lot of confusion among boxing fans in who are the very best welterweights in the division right. The ratings that we see from the four sanctioning bodies and Ring Magazine almost appear to some fans be senseless without reason. For example, Ring Magazine has Kell Brook rated No.1, and that’s not someone that the average boxing fans would agree as being good enough to deserve that rating.

This is why I’ve decided to make my own list, which I personally feel is a lot better than the sanctioning bodies and Ring Magazine’s bizarre rankings systems. It’s nice to remove politics from the ranking systems and just go with who the actual best fighters are. That’s why I feel that my list of welterweights is far better than we could ever hope to get from the alphabet sanctioning bodies or Ring Magazine.

Mikey Garcia says Thurman vs. Porter could have been scored a draw

Thurman vs Porter

By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Mikey Garcia says he thinks last months’ exciting welterweight clash between WBA champion Keith “One Time” Thurman and Shawn Porter was so close that it could have been scored a draw.

Thurman won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 115-113. The general consensus from the boxing fans is that Thurman did just enough to squeak out a narrow victory. However, there were a great many fans that felt the fight could have been scored a draw. This writer had Porter winning six rounds.

Porter wants Garcia, Berto or Rios, Molina or Provodnikov

Image: Porter wants Garcia, Berto or Rios, Molina or Provodnikov

By Allan Fox: Former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) is hoping WBA World 147lb belt holder Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) will give him a rematch so that he can avenge his 12 round unanimous decision loss from June 25. Thurman is Porter’s No.1 target for his next fight if he can get it. However, if Porter can’t get a second fight against Thurman right away, he’d like to get a fight against one of the following fighters: Danny Garcia, Andre Berto, Brandon Rios, John Molina or Ruslan Provodnikov.

Porter can be back inside the ring within the next three months, according to his trainer/father Kenny Porter. That’s an incredibly quick turnaround for a fighter that took as much punishment as Porter did.

Keith Thurman, Boxing’s new Bright Star!

Image: Keith Thurman, Boxing's new Bright Star!

By Leigh K. Seto: As a long time fan of the sweet science and somewhat of a historian of the sport, I was pleased to see the Premier Boxing Champions match up last Saturday night on June 25 between WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight was televised on Showtime Boxing on CBS. It’s rare to see two fighters that are on the rise going toe to toe with each other and taking challenges that other top fighters seem to avoid. The Thurman vs Porter delivered on the hype an we were all watching.

Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter both have an old school style of fighting. With more engaged assaults which captivate and inspire their audience. Like the millions of viewers I was glued to my seat avoiding the occasional fridge trips and idle conversation this fight was exciting from the opening bell.

Having welterweights as good as Thurman and Porter face each other is a rare thing in the sport nowadays. The fight fans in the U.S saw this fight as an interesting one, so they gladly tuned in to see it. Thurman vs Porter

By Allan Fox: For boxing fans that didn’t get a chance to see last Saturday night’s thrilling fight between WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs), the fans can see it tonight on CBS Sports Network at 10:00 p.m. ET. Thurman won the fight just barely by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 115-113.

CBS will also be showing the war between 154lb contenders Jarrett Hurd and Oscar Molina, which in some ways was a more action-packed fight than the Thurman-Porter fight. The Hurd-Molina fight was pure punching with the movement that we saw from Thurman, who did a fair amount of circling of the ring to avoid Porter’s attacking style.

Shawn Porter sent to Hospital after Thurman bout

Thurman vs Porter

By Danny Esch: Last Saturday night over 2 million viewers witnessed two great welterweight fighters in the prime of their careers in the squared circle putting on a great performance with WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) defeating Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight was televised on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS on primetime.

We should all congratulate both camps for putting in the hours of intense training and major sacrifices to travel from their respective homes to Brooklyn New York to put on a memorable performance. In my opinion this fight definitely lived up to the hype that was surrounding it. Thurman and Porter both came to the fight to win and both fighters came to present their “A” game to be victorious over the other.

Thurman vs. Porter brings in big ratings on CBS

Thurman vs Porter

By Allan Fox: Last Saturday’s fight between WBA 147lb champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and #2 WBA Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) was a big success on Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS as presented by Premier Boxing Champions. The Thurman-Porter main event brought in 2.0 rating that increased to 2.6 by the last hour of the fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Thurman won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision. Both fighters were hurt in the match. Porter got the better of Porter overall, but it was still a fight that had very little to separate the two fighters. “There’s got to be a rematch,” said promoter Lou Dibella to ESPN.com.

Thurman: I want Danny Garcia next!

Thurman vs Porter

By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Danny “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) said last night that he was willing to give “Showtime” Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) a rematch if he wanted one. However, it now looks like Thurman has changed his mind about wanting to fight Porter a second time, because he’s now targeting WBC welterweight champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs) for a unification fight.

Thurman, 27, wants the fight against Garcia, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to get it. Despite the fact that Garcia and Thurman are both managed by Al Haymon, it doesn’t make sense for Haymon to make that fight.
