But there’s another fighter on my radar who could also become the top pound for pound fighter on the planet….Paul Williams. Everyone is aware of how good a fighter williams is and yet somehow he doesn’t have anywhere near the following that Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. possess.

Williams more or less easily beat Winky Wright who is a great fighter in his last fight. He then appeared to be finally getting a shot at Kelly Pavlik only for Pavlik to mess him about and delay the fight alot over a staph infection to his hand. Williams would have dismantled Pavlik and I think that would’ve been the beginning of the punisher’s era as the dominant boxer in the middleweight division.

Williams will meet Sergio Martinez in the ring in a few weeks and I believe he will beat him and then go on to bigger and better things, the only problem is the fan following. Kelly Pavlik has a big following in Ohio and Williams could’ve put his name on the map with that win but now he’s fighting an Argetinian who will not enhance his following much if/when he beats him.

Williams is one of my favourite boxers because he is so good at what he does, he throws about a million punches per fight ( obviously nowhere near that amount, but it does feel like it), he can take a punch and he will take on all comers. He lost to Quintana and knocked him out in the first round in the rematch, I think that is a terrific accomplishment in itself.

Williams also beat Antonio Margarito which he did not get much recognition for. I would love to see him in the super six tourney but we all know that won’t happen but it would’ve been nice to see how he would’ve fared against the best in the division. I think he is capable of beating any fighter set in front of him and the way he can move up and down in divisions makes him all the more exciting. Watch out 2010, Paul Williams is coming.
