Image: Kovalev vs. Ward II. Does Sergey risk losing another local decision?

By Gerardo Granados: It is said that the challenger must take the title off the Champion, but in their first meeting, the then defending light heavyweight WBA-IBF-WBO Champion Sergey Kovalev did more than enough to beat the challenger Andre Ward but still end up losing all of his belts. Maybe the reader can recall Ward face before the official scorecards were announced, Ward face expression told the story of a beaten boxer, but then when he heard himself as the winner his face changed to a surprised smiley face.

Andre Ward Sweet Science Teacher

Image: Andre Ward Sweet Science Teacher

By Shaun La: This upcoming weekend has Andre Ward (31-0, 15 KO’s) pitted in a true championship bout that the Light-Heavyweight division wants and what the sport of boxing needs overall in a rematch with Sergey Kovalev. Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KO’s) first bout positioned a by-the-book boxer (Andre) vs. a boxer who can punch (Sergey) into a combative contest, back in November of 2016. Depending on whom you ask (mainly the fans of either boxer), one will say that Andre pulled the win off by boxing smartly, later on in the bout. Others will protest that Sergey had won the majority of the rounds and should have remained undefeated—-a distinction that Andre will carry into their rematch.

By Donavan Leonard: The Marquis of Queensbury Rules for boxing were written long before Andre Ward’s parents were born. The  World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association were formed long before Andre Ward was born. The ideals of “clean punching”, “effective aggression”, “ring generalship”, and “defense” were placed into the verbiage of scoring a professional boxing match long before Andre Ward laced up his first glove.  Therefore the “blame” for his ability to win within the rules of the sport by which he has made his living cannot be placed on his shoulders.

Stevenson chooses NOT to call out Ward-Kovalev winner

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Mdd6_XSH0A

By Jeff Aranow: Light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson took an odd approach last Saturday night after annihilating Andrzej Fonfara in the 2nd round in their rematch by choosing NOT to call out the winner of the Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev II fight. It was odd because it the logical thing for the 39-year-old Stevenson to do, especially given how one-sided his fight was with Fonfara. You have to remember; this wasn’t a fight that the boxing public was clamoring for.
