For eight long years, Chavez Jr. has faced little more than B and C level fighters each time out while being rewarded by being pushed up in the middleweight rankings despite a lack of quality opposition.

Also on the card will be unbeaten Vanes Martirosyan (29-0, 18 KO’s) facing #8 ranked WBC junior middleweight contender Saul Roman (34-8, 18 KOs) for the vacant WBC Silver junior middleweight title. The Chavez-Zbik fight looks to be the better fight because Roman is limping into the Martirosyan fight having lost three out of his last five bouts and should consider himself incredibly lucky to be ranked in the top 10 with that many losses in recent fights.

Zbik, 28, is considered a paper champion by a lot of fans, as he had the WBC title handed to him without a fight after the World Boxing Council stripped Sergio Martinez of his title recently.

Chavez Jr., the son of former boxing world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, was supposed to be taking a tune-up fight against David Medina. It looks like they decided that fight was either too risky or wouldn’t given Chavez Jr. enough time to get ready for the title shot against Zbik.
