Scott Quigg vs. Paulus Ambunda on September 13th in Manchester, UK

quigg433By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (28-0-2, 21 KOs) has a nice little mismatch coming up in his next fight on September 13th when he faces fringe contender #15 IBF Paulus Ambunda (21-1, 10 KOs) at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

This is a case of Quigg being matched against a beatable guy in 33-year-old Ambunda, who was recently beaten last September by Tomoki Kameda by a lopsided 12 round decision. The logical question is why is Quigg fighting a guy that was recently beaten? Who knows?

Santa Cruz wants Quigg next, then Frampton later in the year

Leo Santa Cruz vs Victor Zaleta(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (27-0-1, 15 KO’s) says he’ll be looking to fight a unification match against WBA World 122lb champion Scott Quigg (28-0-2, 21 KO’s) this Summer, and after that Santa Cruz wants to defend his title against #1 WBC, #2 IBF Carl Frampton (18-0, 13 KO’s) at the end of the year. Santa Cruz says he sees Frampton as the stronger guy between him and Quigg, but Frampton doesn’t have a title in his possession like Quigg, so he’s less important right now.

It makes a heck of a lot of sense for Santa Cruz to go after Quigg so that he can unify the titles before he takes the lesser fight against Frampton. That may be a big fight in Northern Ireland where Frampton is from, but in the U.S, a Frampton-Santa Cruz fight doesn’t mean much more than Santa Cruz’s previous title defenses against the likes of Cristian Mijares, Cesar Seada, Victor Terrazas, Alexander Munoz, Victor Zaleta and Eric Morel.

Quigg vs. Leo Santa Cruz unification match in the works, says Eddie Hearn

quigg632By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (28-0-1, 21 KO’s), says he’s working on setting up a unification match between Quigg and WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (27-0-1, 15 KO’s) for a fight that he wants to take place next for the 25-year-old Quigg. Hearn is cutting in line to make this fight, as #1 WBC Carl Frampton was thought to be the next opponent for Santa Cruz. Frampton’s manager Barry McGuigan wants the fight, and Santa Cruz has already said he’d come to the UK to face Frampton for the right amount of money.

Quigg destroyed replacement opponent Tshifhiwa Munyai by a 2nd round TKO last Saturday night at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, UK. Munyai had been pulled in to take the fight at the last minute after Quigg’s originally scheduled opponent Nehomar Cermeno couldn’t make it due to visa problems.

Quigg destroys Munyai

quigg433By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (28-0-2, 21 KO’s) destroyed replacement opponent Tshifhiwa Munyai (24-3-1, 12 KO’s) in the 2nd round tonight at the Phones 4u Arena, in Manchester, United Kingdom. Quigg knocked Munyai down twice in the fight.

Quigg knocked Munyai down with a chopping right hand in the 2nd round. Munyai somehow staggered to his feet and was finished off with a flurry of shots while he was up against the ropes. Referee Howard John Foster then stepped in and halted it before Quigg had a chance to put Munyai down again.

Murray looks to take Crolla’s scalp tonight

murray34By Scott Gilfoid: Lightweight John Murray (33-2, 20 KO’s) will be looking to score a knockout tonight against the light-hitting Anthony Crolla (27-4-1, 10 KO’s) to add his scalp to his growing collection at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, UK. Murray plans on knocking Crolla out in order to make sure he gets his hand raised tonight. Murray doesn’t want to wind up losing a controversial decision if the fight goes to the scorecards.

The outcome of this fight has huge ramifications, as they’re likely to face former WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns next in a nice payday fight in Glasgow, Scotland. Murray vs. Burns would be a great contest, because Burns looks like he’s on his last legs at this point in his career and Murray could be the one that sends him packing.

Crolla will be trying to jab his way to a win tonight, and I suspect we’re going to see a lot of movement from him like we did in his rematch against Derry Mathews. If Murray is on his job he’ll make sure that he cuts off the ring on Crolla to force him to fight for a full three minutes of every round instead of just a small fraction.

Quigg faces replacement opponent Munyai this Saturday

quigg43By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (27-0-2, 20 KO’s) will be defending his title this Saturday night against little known fringe contender Tshifhiwa “The Atomic spider” Munyai (24-2-1, 12 KO’s) at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom. The 28-year-old Munyai replaces Quigg’s previously scheduled opponent Nehomar Cermeno, who couldn’t take the fight due to visa problems.

Munyai has been to the UK on several occasions, whipping Martin Power twice and beating Lee Haskins without any problems. The South African Munyai had too much talent for those fighters, and he pretty much made easy work of them.

Scott Quigg Simply Has To Impress To Gain On Frampton

By Diarmuid Sherry: In the modern era of boxing, for observers to choose who the best boxer between two rivals is, it seems that instead of a good old-fashioned fight to decide who is the more superior fighter, but that the respective records of the two boxers are closely examined instead. The no fight of Mayweather-Pacquiao is the obvious example, but on the smaller British scale, smaller-weight class category is the prospect, or rather lack of a prospect of a dust-up between Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton.

Scott Quigg vs. Tshifhiwa Munyai on April 19th at the Manchester Arena

quigg4334By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (27-0-2, 20 KO’s) has a new opponent for his April 19th title defense at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK. Quigg, 25, was supposed to be fighting Nehomar Cermeno, but he couldn’t take the fight due to him having visa issues that got in the way of him being able to travel to the UK to take the fight. So instead of Quigg facing Cermeno, he’ll get a downgrade to #10 WBA Tshifhiwa Munyai (24-2-1, 12 KO’s).

It pretty much amounts to the same thing for Quigg. Cermeno was someone who had lost 5 out of his last 9 fights. Munyai has lost 2 out of his last 10 fight, but against far lesser talented opposition. Munyai, 28, has losses to Christian Esquivel and Osumanu Akaba. He’s not beaten any notable contenders during his career, and that’s not a good sign.

Scott Quigg vs. Nehomar Cermeno in 12 more days on April 19th

quigg43By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (27-0-2, 20 KO’s) will be making his second defense of his WBA 122lb title 12 days from now against #1 WBA Nehomar Cermeno (22-5-1, 13 KO’s) on April 19th at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

This is a fight that reminds me a lot of the recent Carl Frampton vs. Hugo Cazares matchup, mainly because Cermeno isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the other sanctioning bodies at this time, and he doesn’t seem to deserve to be ranked No.1 by the WBA based on what he’s done in the last 4 years. I mean, if losing 5 out of your last 9 fights is what it takes to get you a No.1 ranking by the WBA, then that’s a sad statement for that particular sanctioning body.

Quigg faces Cermeno on April 19th

quigg43By Scott Gilfoid: WBA regular super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (27-0-2, 20 KO’s) will be making his third title defense of his WBA 122 lb strap on April 19th against 34-year-old #1 WBA challenger Nehomar Cermeno (22-5-1, 13 KO’s) at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Quigg still hasn’t gotten to the point where the World Boxing Association has ordered him to face the WBA Super World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, but when that times comes, we’ll be seeing the last of Quigg as the champion. Rigondeaux will easily beat Quigg, and then it’ll be interesting to see where Quigg goes from there.
