Saul Alvarez will never beat Austin Trout

trout342By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions badly wants to match WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) up with Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) so they can make a star out of Alvarez. However, the one fighter that boxing fans will probably never see Golden Boy match their Golden Goose Alvarez up with is unbeaten WBA World light middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s).

The reason boxing fans won’t get to see this fight is because Trout has the perfect style to totally dominate Golden Boy’s flat-footed fighter Alvarez. Alvarez doesn’t have the ability to move quickly around the ring, and he only seems capable of fighting flat-footed much in the same way that former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fights.

Will Cotto be Saul Alvarez’s sacrificial lamb on May 4th?

alvarez4534By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions wants to get a fighter with a name for their young star in the making WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to impress boxing fans against on May 4th when he fights again. Alvarez is being talked about as fighting on the Floyd Mayweather Jr – Robert Guerrero pay per view undercard on HBO at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cotto, 32, is coming off back to back defeats against Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout, and he’s not in the greatest position career-wise.

Cotto appears to have lost a few steps and he’s at the stage of his career where he needs to either be matched carefully against guys that are beatable for him or against the biggest name possible so he can maximize his paydays with what little time he’s got left. Cotto had mentioned not too long go the idea of him moving in weight to the middleweight division so that he could attempt to capture a fourth world title, but that’s kind of a silly notion now after his loss to Trout.

So who’s next for Mayweather: Robert Guerrero or Canelo Alvarez?

alvarez3By Al Gonzalez: All I want for Christmas is to find out who Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be fighting next. Well, as most boxing fans already know there are two names floating around already, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and the pride and joy of most Mexican boxing fans Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

So I’d like to take a moment to discuss these two potential Floyd fights.

ROBERT GUERRERO – In my opinion I believe this will be Floyd’s choice for his proposed ring return in May. Does Guerrero deserve the shot? About a year or so ago I would’ve definitely said “NO” – but based on this recent performances, I’m all for it.

Canelo could face Cotto on May 4th

cotto8By Allan Fox: With the news that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will likely be facing Robert Guerrero on May 4th, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will have to take another opponent for the same May 4th fight date. Apparently, his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions are still considering putting him in with Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s).

Austin Trout is also being mentioned as a possibility for Canelo, but it seems like Cotto is really the guy that they want for this fight because Trout isn’t well known and he’s a tall fighter with a great jab, a southpaw stance and excellent mobility.

Robert Guerrero deserves Mayweather fight more than Canelo Alvarez

guerrero41By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be facing either WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) or WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) next on May 4th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. I think the choice is a pretty simple one for Mayweather.

Guerrero has accomplished far more in his 11-year pro career than what Canelo has in his 7-year career. It’s not even close. While Guerrero has been capturing world titles at featherweight, super featherweight, and lightweight, Alvarez picked up his WBC title in a fight against against a fringe welterweight contender in Matthew Hatton.

Mayweather: Canelo Street or Guerrero Alley?

floyd33These two decisions lie at the feet of the last known (to casual fans) Pound for Pound great. Floyd Mayweather has two tough choices that can either hurt his career or hurt his career. Canelo and Guerrero are both highly skilled and respected boxers in the boxing community. Either one of these champs would eventually become acceptable to those truly familiar with the sport but this article is focusing on legacy. How will Floyd’s legacy be seen after a confrontation with either of these fighters.

In all honesty Mayweather will always be a victim of his own dominance. We have come to expect something from Floyd that we don’t expect of any other athlete in the world. For him to never lose, and since we expect him to never lose we truly believe he is perfect. Since he is perfect no matter who the opponent he willl never be given his just due. It wasn’t till recently when he came back down to earth and showed that he could be hit and made to bleed that fans applauded his effort. Or was it just Miguel Cotto who poked a hole in Mayweather’s cloak of invincibility?
