Canelo interested in Pacquiao, Golovkin, Cotto and Chavez Jr fights

canelo035By Dan Ambrose: Earlier today, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez announced along with Golden Boy Promotions that he’d signed a deal to have his fights shown on HBO. Canelo said that he’s interested in facing the following fighters: Manny Pacquiao, Julio Cesar Chavez, Miguel Cotto, and Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo said that the Cotto fight isn’t complete at this time and he’s interested in facing any one of the other names mentioned. Just how much interested Canelo is in fighting some of them such as Golovkin is unclear.

Canelo inks with HBO

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 23, 2014)-Golden Boy Promotions Founder Oscar de la Hoya, HBO Sports President Ken Hershman, and superstar boxer Canelo Álvarez today announced a major new agreement to showcase the fan-favorite fighter’s matches on HBO Sports.

“For all of my career, I have wanted to fight on HBO for one main reason-I believe it will allow more of my fans to see me in action,” said Álvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs). “Today marks a huge milestone for me, and I look forward to a long and successful partnership with HBO.”

Canelo and Golden Boy to announce HBO deal today

canelo90By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy promotions president Oscar De La Hoya and HBO Sports president Ken Hershman will be announcing the signing of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) to HBO today in a press conference. It’s unclear for how many years the 24-year-old Canelo’s contract will be with HBO, but you can assume it’s going to be at least 2 years.

HBO is betting that Canelo will be able to look as good as he did before his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr and his less than impressive performances against Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara. This is obviously a gamble on HBO’s part because Canelo has a lot of question marks around his ability after his last fight against Lara.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Joshua Clottey expected to be announced today for December 6th on HBO

The Canelo-Clottey fight is scheduled to take place on December 6th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. This is an interesting fight because Canelo had the options of fighting Demetrius Andrade, James Kirkland and Erislandy Lara, but he chose the soon to be 37-year-old Clottey.

James Kirkland’s team opted for Rosado over Canelo & Lara

kirkland53By Jesse James: American slugger James Kirkland was the front runner to being Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next opponent on December 6th. Kirkland was also being considered for Erislandy Lara who recently lost to Canelo Alvarez via split decision. Though Kirkland was definitely Canelo’s first choice, Kirkland’s team was reportedly not interested in Canelo or Lara.

Instead they opted for journeymen Gabriel Rosado who is a tough costumer and has had the bad end of decisions in his last few fights before Bryan Vera. Kirkland is an American favorite and has a very good trainer in Anne Wolf.

Kellerman: Golovkin needs Canelo, Cotto or Mayweather to become a PPV fighter

golovkin99999By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Max Kellerman said what many boxing fans already knew last Wednesday night when he said that WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) needs one of the big names – Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to agree to fight Golovkin before he can become a pay-per-view seller in his own right.

It’s not enough right now that Golovkin is knocking out everyone he faces dating back to 2009. He needs to get a scalp from the like of Canelo, Cotto or Mayweather for him to get to the next level.

Mayweather not giving up his May 2015 date to Canelo

floyd762222By Chris Williams: If former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez wants to be stubborn about fighting on Cinco de Mayo next May despite WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr already planning on fighting on that date on Showtime PPV, then Canelo is going to need to accept that his likely catch-weight fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will bring in far, far less PPV buys than what it would have done if Canelo and Cotto had the May Cinco de Mayo holiday date all to themselves.

“Yes, I plan on fighting in May,” Mayweather told Fighthype.com.

Canelo orders De La Hoya to book Cinco de Mayo date for next fight

canelo9999By Cameron Gillon: Golden Boy promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya has said if the Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto mega fight doesn’t happen in May 2015, he hopes he can match the red haired Mexican against fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at a catch weight of 159, according to The Record.

He went on to say the fight would sell big with the Mexican audience and would be a big pay per view fight with the correct backing. Oscar did say the fight between Alvarez and Cotto will likely happen, but he wants to make sure he has a backup fight if it falls through.

Demetrius Andrade would be too much for Canelo Alvarez, says Paul A.

Philadelphia (September 10, 2014)– In recent weeks, Former Jr. Middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO’s) and his team at Golden Boy Promotions have been going over potential opponents for Canelo’s expected return to the ring this fall.

Three names that are allegedly on a short list include undefeated current WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14 KO’s), former Welterweight champion Joshua Clottey and James Kirkland.
