By Dan Ambrose: Earlier today, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez announced along with Golden Boy Promotions that he’d signed a deal to have his fights shown on HBO. Canelo said that he’s interested in facing the following fighters: Manny Pacquiao, Julio Cesar Chavez, Miguel Cotto, and Gennady Golovkin.
Canelo said that the Cotto fight isn’t complete at this time and he’s interested in facing any one of the other names mentioned. Just how much interested Canelo is in fighting some of them such as Golovkin is unclear.
Canelo didn’t categorize any of these fighters in terms of how interested he was in fighting them, and how likely it would be that he’d get in the ring with them.
“I’m willing to fight anybody,” Canelo said. “The Cotto fight isn’t a done deal yet, and there are others who fight on HBO that fans want to see, Gennady Golovkin, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The fight with Chavez is a good fight to make in Mexico or anywhere else.”
You would have to assume that Cotto is still the No.1 target for Canelo to be fighting next in early 2015 on Cinco de Mayo next May. Canelo needs to take that fight before someone else gets to Cotto and beats him again.
Right now, Cotto is doing well being matched up against older fighters like Sergio Martinez and Delvin Rodriguez. Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach has a lot of boxing fans believing that Cotto has been rejuvenated rather than a case of him being strategically matched against faded fighters. That’s why it’s the perfect time for Canelo to fight Cotto now before the curtain is pulled, revealing that Cotto is the same fighter that was beaten by Austin Trout and Floyd Mayweather jr.
“Obviously those names are the guys that I would like to fight,” Canelo said as quoted by Fighthype.com. “Yeah, the possibilities are enhanced now being with HBO.”
My guess is Canelo has very high interested in fighting Cotto next followed by the likes of Chavez Jr and/or Pacquiao. Golovkin is someone who will be a down the road opponent if Canelo doesn’t get beaten up and exposed by Chavez Jr, Cotto and Pacquiao first.
