Canelo: I’ll probably stay at 154 my whole career

Canelo Open Workout(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) made a startling confession on Tuesday in a media workout from the House of Boxing Training Center when he revealed that he plans on staying in the 154 pound division his entire career rather than moving up to middleweight so that he can fight guys that are close to being the same weight as him. I guess this means that Canelo has an excuse for not fighting Gennady Golovkin if someone asks about that fight.

Canelo has been rehydrating to the 170s for his fights recently, which puts him in the light heavyweight weight class when he steps inside the ring in the 154 pound division. In his last fight, Canelo rehydrated to 175 against Alfredo Angulo, and in his fight against Austin Trout, he weighed 172. This is why it seems hard to fathom why Canelo is resistant to fighting guys that are closer to his own weight.

McGirt: Lara is going to beat Canelo

lara7By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Buddy McGirt sees WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) beating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) in their fight on July 12th. McGirt likes the blend of boxing skills and punching power that Lara has in this fight, and he also sees his southpaw stance as being a factor in this fight. Canelo says he’s been training with southpaw sparring partners, but it’s not likely that they have the kind of talent that Lara has.

“Canelo’s going to get beat by Lara, just watch,” McGirt said to esnewsreporting.com. “He [Lara] can box as well as punch and he can box southpaw.”

Lara: Canelo can’t do anything to surprise me on July 12th

lara5(Photo credit: Paul Hernandez) By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) is training hard with different sparring partners to get ready for his non-title defense against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lara has worked every angle that the 23-year-old Canelo could possibly dream up for their fight, so he expects to be ready for whatever the red-haired fighter brings to the ring on that night. Lara is ready for Canelo’s plan A-Z, and he doesn’t see anything the fighter can do that will trouble him in this fight.

“My sparring partners are pushing me with numerous styles and I’m adapting to all of them comfortably,” Lara said. “I told them to come extra hard to prepare me for the pressure Canelo is going to bring. I feel great and my timing is right on.”

Canelo: I want my name always mentioned when people talk of boxing

canelo67By Dan Ambrose: The 23-year-old former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) wants to create a huge legacy for himself before he retires from the sport in the distant future, and he’d like go down in history as one of the best fighters the sport has seen.

This is why he says he’s agreed to fight WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) in their catch-weight fight at 155 on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo says he chose Lara not because of the pressure that the Cuban Lara was putting on him 24/7 to agree to the fight, but because he wants to be known as the type of fighter who was willing to fight anybody.

Lara: I’m going to give Canelo a beat down like Trinidad did to De La Hoya

lara84By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) says that he wants to give his opponent Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) a beating similar to the one that boxing great Felix Trinidad gave to a then prime Oscar De La Hoya in their fight in September of 1999.

De La Hoya fought well for the first 6 rounds, and then took his foot off the accelerator in the second half of the fight. This enabled Trinidad to come back and give him a minor beating en route to winning a 12 round majority decision.

Erislandy Lara: I’m going to bust Canelo in the mouth on July 12th

LaraPrepares4Canelo_Hoganphotos6(Picture credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) is disgusted with his opponent Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s lack of discipline for failing to agree to fighting at the 154lb weight, and he’s equally disgusted with his trash talking that he’s been doing in the last couple of weeks as the two fighters get nearer to their July 12th fight date at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lara says the first thing he wants to do when the fight starts is to smash the 23-year-old Canelo in the mouth.

“I guarantee 100 percent I’m going to win the fight,” Lara said. “I’m going to bust his [Canelo] mouth on July 12. I guarantee.”

Lara: Canelo is an insecure fighter who knows he’s going to lose

LaraPrepares4Canelo_Hoganphotos3(Picture credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) sees challenger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) as being fragile mentally to the point where he needs to make up whoppers in order to boosts his own shaky self-confidence. Canelo already was beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr last September, and he stands to lose a fortune if he gets beaten by Lara in their fight on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A loss for the red-haired Canelo in this fight will remove all possibility of him fighting for a world title next May against WBC middleweight champion in what would be a huge pay-per-view fight that could approach the PPV numbers that Canelo’s fight against Mayweather pulled in. But in this case, Canelo would be receiving a much bigger cut of the financial pie because the purse split between him and Cotto would likely be closer to 50-50 than the split that he received for the Mayweather fight.

Pacquiao, Cotto and Mayweather are going to need to start facing better opposition to keep their PPV numbers high

pac87By Allan Fox: As we’ve seen recently the top fighters Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto, and Manny Pacquiao have all seen their pay-per-view numbers drop off with their recent fights. The thought here is that boxing fans are overwhelmed by the monthly PPV fights that are popping up and expanding their normal cable bills by another $60 to $75.

When you’re already paying $100 a month for overpriced cable, having your cable bill almost doubled each month, it doesn’t make a lot of people happy. For this reason the top promotional companies are either going to need to start having less PPV events, which is highly doubtful given the money these cards are making for the companies, or start putting better shows.
