Canelo to challenge Mayweather for his May and September fight dates in 2015

Canelo AlvarezBy Chris Williams: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) is going to compete with boxing’s biggest star Floyd Mayweather Jr for his May and September dates in 2015. Canelo hasn’t even proven that he can bring in half of the pay-per-view numbers that Mayweather typically pulls in for his fights.

Canelo plans on fighting on Cinco de Mayo in May, and then on the Mexican Independence Holiday in September of next year. Those Mayweather’s dates, and if Canelo tries to get on them too, there’s going to be a problem unless 23-year-old Canelo is willing to give ground to his elders to show his respect.

Cotto-Canelo isn’t happening in 2014, says Arum

canelo7657By Chris Williams: Bob Arum of Top Rank doesn’t want to put together the fight that many boxing fans want to see between WBC middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) this year. Instead, Arum thinks the Cotto-Canelo fight will do better if he lets it marinate until next year in May at which point he plans on sticking it on Cinco de Mayo.

It’s obviously a terrible idea, because Arum isn’t going to kick a star like Floyd Mayweather Jr off of his fight date. Mayweather hasn’t come out and put dibs on the May 2nd Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend yet, but it kind of goes without say, doesn’t it? Mayweather always fights in September and May, and he’s impossible to move off those dates due to his huge popularity.

Canelo says he’ll beat Lara because of his experience

canelo9999By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) was hunting for reasons last night why he’ll beat WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) when asked last night by Showtime why he’ll beat the Cuban fighter on July 12th. To the 23-year-old Canelo, he sees his experience as being the major factor why he’ll beat the 31-year-old Lara when they meet each other on Showtime pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo has been in the ring with the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Austin Trout, Kermit Cintron, Matthew Hatton, Alfonso Gomez, Josesito Lopez, Shane Mosley, Ryan Rhodes, Carlos Manuel Baldomir, Lovemore Ndou and Jose Miguel Cotto. Most of those guys were smaller than Canelo though, and older too.

Canelo is using Angulo fight as blueprint in how to beat Erislandy Lara

canelo112By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) is using Erislandy Lara’s fight against Alfredo Angulo from last year as a blueprint to follow to learn how to beat the tough Cuban fighter Lara on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo doesn’t care that Lara was teeing off on Angulo the entire fight and ultimately stopped him in the 10th round when Angulo turned his back on Lara after getting tagged with a brutal straight left to the head; Canelo still feels that the best way to beat Lara is to follow Angulo’s game plan by attacking him.

It’s probably not going to work out too well for the 23-year-old Canelo to be aping Angulo’s fighting approach, because what worked for Angulo probably won’t work well for Canelo. It’s a different situation.

Roach says Lara brings nothing for Cotto, even if he beats Canelo

lara455By Chris Williams: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach says that WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) doesn’t have much to offer for a fight against Cotto, even if Lara defeats former WBA/WBC 154-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next month in their fight on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Roach likes the idea of matching Cotto vs. Canelo, but not against Lara.

“Of course Canelo has to win so we can make the fight. I don’t think Lara brings enough to the table even if he does win. That fight does nothing for Miguel,” Roach said to thaboxingvoice.com.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara: Which boxing school is better?

lara677676By Gerardo Grandos: I was talking to a friend about the upcoming fight between former light middleweight champion Mexican Saul Alvarez and the current WBA Regular light middleweight belt holder Erislandy Lara, when my friend asked which boxing school is better; I told him that it is not about a boxing school or boxing style but more of the capacity of the fighters who display their abilities inside a ring at that exact moment.

But he wasn’t pleased with my answer so I had to elaborate while doing a quick research on internet to explain myself. I think both boxing schools are great but their boxing styles are different as well as successful.

Arum says Canelo vs. Cotto could happen on Cinco de Mayo in 2015; Mayweather pushed off his date?

arum999By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum if kicking around the idea of matching WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto against former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo in 2015 or possibly this year. If the Canelo-Cotto fight does take place on Cinco de Mayo in 2015, they’ll effectively be pushing Floyd Mayweather Jr off of his date unless he can pick out a star big enough to cause Arum not to want to compete with his fight on that date.

It’ll be difficult for Mayweather to pick someone else popular enough to outperform the Canelo-Cotto fight unless Mayweather were to fight someone like Gennady Golovkin. That’s not going to happen though.

Canelo: This will be the toughest fight of my career against Lara

canelo66By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) has finished licking the mental wounds from his one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr from last September and he now has one win under his belt since that loss in beating a very slow Alfredo Angulo last March.

That victory has Canelo feeling as confident as he was before his loss to Mayweather, and he’s going to need that confidence in order to deal with Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) in their catch-weight at 155 pounds next month on July 12th on HBO pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Would a rematch between Saul Alvarez and Mayweather hurt Canelo’s career ?

canelo6767By Cameron Gillon: There has been much talk about Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) potentially working with Golden Boy Promotions once more if it is to make a deal for a rematch with Mexican star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s). To me this fight doesn’t make much sense for it to happen, especially after Floyd exposed Canelo in September of 2013, some people could argue that Alvarez faced the pound for pound king to early in his career.

This I agree with, I think Canelo didn’t face good enough opposition to get a fight with Mayweather. Canelo has beaten the likes of Shane Mosley, Matthew Hatton, Austin Trout, Carlos Baldomir and Josesito Lopez, But you can argue also that Austin Trout beat Canelo in a close fight, many thought Trout won that fight, it was of course after this bout that Canelo then went on to face Mayweather and lost. However, I think Canelo should of faced Floyd in 2014 or 2015 to really make a better fight of it.

Canelo’s trainer wants him to punish Lara for his trash talking

canelo8999By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s trainer Jose “Chepo” Reynosa wants the 23-year-old Canelo to punish WBA 154l-pound champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) in their fight on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. He wants Canelo to give the Cuban Lara a prolonged beating in this fight for some reason.

The only thing that Lara did was badger the red-haired Canelo to try and get him to fight him, because he’d seen Canelo fighting guys that are arguably below his own talent in Matthew Hatton, Alfredo Angulo, Shane Mosley, Alfonso Gomez, Austin Trout, Josesito Lopez, Kermit Cintron and Ryan Rhodes. Lara basically just called Canelo out on him facing a lot of weak guys instead of stepping it up to fight him. The one good opponent Canelo has fought during his career, Floyd Mayweather Jr, soundly beat him last year.
