Is Canelo ducking Golovkin?

canelo5666By Nick Hagen: The 11th of December was the extended cutoff date that the WBC put in place last week for Alvarez and Golovkin to come to an agreement for a fight next year. As of yet we have heard nothing from either camp to suggest that negotiations have even started taking place.

The majority of Boxing fans are desperate for this fight to happen to find out who the real champion is within the 160lbs middleweight division. This means you can weigh up to and including 160lbs when fighting for the WBC, IBO, WBA and IBF belts etc. Please correct me if I’m wrong here.

So we are in a situation where we have Alvarez and Golovkin holding all these belts between them, yet one of them refuses to fight over 155lbs, a catch weight limit which De La Hoya and Alvarez have invented for themselves, because supposedly Alvarez is not ready to fight at the stipulated limit of 160lbs.

I’m sure that I’m speaking for many Boxing fans, by saying this is absolutely crazy. Alvarez rehydrates to somewhere near to 175lbs, which is about the same as Golovkin come fight night. The suppose rules the WBC has in place, doesn’t allow their champions to dictate to their mandatory challenges, a weight suitable to them.

The WBC are going to have to be really firm on this matter. Unfortunately i for one do not think they will be, because Alvarez generates way too much money. There is no way that the WBC will force Alvarez agree to fight Golovkin at the 160lbs limit and there is no way they will strip him of his title. The most likely scenario is that we will hear that Golovkin has agreed to an interim fight before fighting Golvkin some time in the near future.

This kind of situation wouldn’t happen in any other sports. Trying to force a mandatory (who by the way is a champion in his own rights) to come down in weight is just ridiculous. You could compare it to an 100 meter sprinter who weighs 160lbs being forced to come down to 155lbs because its the best competition weight for one of the other competitors. Would you ever see this happening?

If we pull back all the smoke screens here, Alvarez doesn’t want to ever fight Golovkin, (At least whilst he is in his prime) because he knows he would lose. De La Hoya’s knows that if Alvarez loses against Golovkin, his stock will drop dramatically and the WBC are too afraid to take the title away from Alvarez because he is a big Mexican name, who brings in the dollars and the fan base.

I’m interested to hear the pending announcements and would be shocked if I’m way off the mark.
Ultimately we as the fans are the losers in all of this, because we are being denied the unification fights we deserve and seeing the best fight the best!
