De La Hoya: The best is yet to come for Canelo Alvarez

delahoya1By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC 154lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) participated in his media day in San Diego House of Boxing gym. Canelo, 25, is getting ready for his HBO PPV fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) this month on 11/21 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo’s longtime promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes that he’s going to find success in this fight, and that this is only the beginning for his fighter. De La Hoya believes that Canelo is on his way to becoming a huge star, especially now that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is no longer around to hog the limelight.

Roach wants Mayweather for Cotto, not Golovkin

cotto (10)By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach says he prefers a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) fight on November 21st rather than a unification fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs).

Roach says Golovkin isn’t a big name right now, and he’s not a pay-per-view draw like he needs to be in order for a fight between him and Cotto to be a big fight. Roach thinks that Golovkin will be a good fight for Cotto at some point in the future, but not right now.

Canelo expects intense fight against Cotto

YouTube video

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) is banking on his fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) as being a really intense fight on November 21st. That’s the kind of fight that Canelo needs for him to find success. He’s not going to do well in a fight where Cotto is using movement and boxing him all night long. Canelo doesn’t have the mobility, and he especially doesn’t have the stamina to chase Cotto around the ring for 12 rounds.

Roach: Cotto will try and box Canelo

roach111By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says he’s going to have his fighter Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) emphasize his boxing skills in his title defense 19 days from now against Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) on 11/21.

Roach understands full well that if Cotto chooses to slug with Canelo, he’d be playing into the 25-year-old fighter’s game plan by doing that. Canelo is younger, taller, and heavier than Cotto by 15 pounds. It would be an insane move for Cotto to elect to brawl with Cotto in this fight because he doesn’t have the size to do that.

Atlas: Golovkin has to agree with whatever Canelo asks of him

CANELO ÁLVAREZ media day workoutBy Chris Williams: If IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) wants a big money fight against Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) in 2016, then Golovkin will need to agree to the 155lb catch-weight that Canelo wants him to agree to in order for him to get the fight, says trainer/ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas.

Canelo is the one who brings in the pay-per-view buys and he’s the much bigger star than the Kazakhstan native Golovkin, so he can ask for anything he wants. It won’t bother Canelo if Golovkin says ‘no’ to his request for a 155lb catch-weight because Canelo will be fine if he never fights Golovkin.

Canelo is going to have problems with Cotto

CANELO ÁLVAREZ media day workoutBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Ricky Funez expects WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) to use his vast amount of experience to give the 25-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) all kinds of problems in their fight next month on November 28th on HBO PPV.

Funez notes that Cotto’s smaller brother Jose Miguel Cotto had Canelo hurt in the 1st round in their fight five years ago in 2010. Canelo was able to weather the storm in the 1st round to come back and score a 9th round knockout against the much lighter Cotto in that fight, but for a moment there it looked like Canelo was on the verge of being knocked out.

Golovkin should call Canelo’s bluff and agree to fight him at 155

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: For boxing fans interested in knowing when IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) and his promoter Tom Loeffler will be making a decision about when to fight again, they’ll need to sit tight for a while and wait until the smoke clears from next months’ fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul Canelo Alvarez.

Golovkin wants the fight next, but he could be hit with a huge obstacle and getting the fight with the 25-year-old Mexican fighter. Canelo says only fight Golovkin at a catch-weight of 155lbs. It’s unknown how serious Canelo was when he said he’d fighting Golovkin at that weight.

Canelo also says that he’ll be moving onto the next big fight once he gets past WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in their fight on November 21st on HBO PPV from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo says he’s ready for Golovkin

1-cotto-canelo-m (9)By Dan Ambrose: Two years have gone by since former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) lost his two 154lb titles to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in losing by a 12 round decision in September 2013, and since then, Canelo has beaten Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara and James Kirkland.

Lara was a top fighter, whereas Angulo and Kirkland were seen as aging and inactive guys from yesterday. Canelo, 25, says he’s improved from the Mayweather loss and has picked up more experience.
